Biography

Jack Brinson Duke came from Conecuh County, Alabama to Clayton, Texas as a single man before the Civil War.[1] After his arrival in Panola County, he married Lucinda Fallwell in 1860, and they had six children (one died as an infant).

Research Notes

It is thought that his parents were John M. Duke and Elizabeth Massey.[2] The only supporting evidence for this other than the 1850 census is a document linking him to his sister, Martha,[3] and autosomal DNA matches that confirm a relationship between the descendants of the two siblings. While not definite proof, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, it seems likely that these are the correct relationships.

It has long been speculated by Jack's descendants that Adam Duke was his uncle, since they were said to have come to Texas in the same wagon train, and his son, William Brinson, married a granddaughter of Adam. yDNA evidence indicates that to be a possibility, but the closeness of the relationship is still unproven and still has not revealed the identity of their common ancestor. However, descendants of both men are known to descend from John Duke from Isle of Wight, Virginia.[4]
