Biography

Ernst Dumbauld (alternatively Dumbald, Dumbaldt, Duimbauld, or Dumbolt ) was born in Lörrach, Baden, Germany on the 10 of March 1719 [1] . He is the only confirmed son of Salomea Lang and Abraham Dumboldt, a master workman who operated a wool processing factory [2]

On or before 19 October 1736, a pair, recorded as Ernst and Abraham Dumbauld, arrived in Pennsylvania aboard the Brigantine (sailing ship) John, of Perth Amboy (New Jersey). The ship sailed from Rotterdam via Dover with 110 passengers from the Palatinate. Two lists name them (with various spellings) among the 37 adult male Palatines who, on 19 October 1736, swore an oath of allegiance to the government at the Courthouse of Philadelphia. [3] [4]

Research Notes

Issues

Many unsourced reports appear to conflate various male members of the Dumbauld/Dumbolt/Dumbold line. It seems possible that Ernst arrived with a brother or cousin of a similar age and that various sources have conflated the two individuals. Careful review of the any questionable sources appearing below is recommended.

Some unsourced reports indicate that Ernst was one of three individuals travelling together. An unnamed woman, who was reportedly first to die shortly after their arrival, may have been a sister or his mother Salomea.

Possibly Related Profiles

  • Abraham Dumboldt was the father of Rudolph Dumbold. Unsourced records indicate there may have been three brothers and a variety of spellings exist for this family name.
  • Abraham Dumboldt was the father of Ernst Dumboldt. Unsourced records indicate there may have been three brothers and a variety of spellings exist for this family name.
  • A man of similar age, Abraham Dumbauld, may have been a brother or cousin of Ernst but no sources have been identified that support either relationship with any certainty. It's also possible Abraham Dumbauld who arrived on the same ship may have been the father of Ernst.

The Poes were all muscular men, none of them being less than six feet in height, and although noted for their heroic achievements, were peaceable, kind- hearted, and greatly esteemed by their neighbors. Henry and Levi Adams, sons-in-law of George Poe, were also natives of Maryland. They came to Salt Lick some time about 1790, and Levi, after liv- ing a time there, went to the West to join the Poe family. Henry Adams settled on Back Run, dying on the farm now owned by David Adams about twenty years ago, at the age of eighty-five years. He had sons named John, Henry, and George, the latter still living in Bullskin at the age of eighty years. His sisters were married to Jacob Pritts, Abraham Dumbauld, and Daniel Witt, all of Salt Lick.

SALT LICK TOWNSHIP.

The Dumbauld family was the first to make a per- manent settlement and retain it to the pre.sent time. The progenitor of the family was Abraham(sic?) Dumbauld (formerly Duimbauld), a native of the canton of Berne, Switzerland, who emigrated to America when he was nineteen years of age. He settled at Hagers- town, where in time he married a daughter of the founder of that town, and subsequently came with a number of other immigrants to the Ligonier Valley. He laid claim by tomahawk right to large tracts of land on Four-Mile Run, west of the Chestnut Ridge, and on Champion and Indian Creeks, in Salt Lick. This was before the Indian troubles were settled, and after being in the country a short time, the Dum- baulds with others sought safety by going back to Hagerstown. About 1769 they returned to the Li- gonier Valley and erected a block-house on Four- Mile Run, to which they might flee in case of Indian incursions or when they apprehended an attack by the savages. Abraham Dumbauld had two sons and several daughters ; the former were named Peter and Abraham. The latter left the home of his father and brother, in Westmoreland County, and about 1777 settled on the Dumbauld claim on Indian Creek, near where judge Dumbauld now lives. Even at that time they did not live secure from the Indians, and on several occasions Abraham Dumbauld took his family from Salt Lick to the block-house on the Henry farm in the Ligonier Vallev, burving such of (pg) 743 their valuables as they could not carry with them. On one occasion a lot of dishes were thus hidden in the hurry of their departure, and when they re- turned the most diligent search failed to reveal the spot, the dishes being finally given up as lost. A sister of Abraham Dumbauld, who came with him to Salt Lick, was the first person to die in the township. Her coffin was a trough-shaped box, hewed out of a chestnut log, and the place of burial was on the Dum- bauld tract, where they made a family graveyard. This tract of land embraced three hundred and sixty- seven acres, the warrant therefor being dated 1785, and extended on both sides of the Indian Creek north of Champion Run. Abraham Dumbauld died about 1828, upwards of seventy years of age, and his wife, whose maiden name was Catharine Boyer, sur- vived him, dying at the age of eighty years. Their children were all born in Salt Lick, as follows ; Fred- erick, Feb. 6, 1778; Mary, July 6, 1780; Philip, June 10, 1783; David, June 18, 1785; Peter, Dec. 20, 1787; Christiana, March 3, 1790; Barbara, Sept. 16, 1792; Dolly, March 24, 1795; Elizabeth, Sept. 8, 1797. Frederick Dumbauld was the first white child born in the township. He lived on the homestead until about 1832, when he moved to Ohio. Philip, the second son, lived on an adjoining farm, and after his death, some time about 1830, the family also emi- grated to Ohio. David settled on Back Run, where he died after 1860. He was the father of Hugh and Samuel Dumbauld, who removed to Indiana. Peter married Sally Cable, and lived on the homestead until his death in April, 1875. For many years he was a justice of the peace. He was the father of Abraham ' C. Dumbauld, living in the western part of the town- .ship; Jonathan, living in Somerset County; Samuel, living in Illinois; Peter and Solomon, who removed to Indiana; and David W. C, the youngest son, yet living on the homestead, which has been occupied by the family more than a century. He has held many offices of public trust, and is better known as Judge Dumbauld. The only daughter, Elizabeth, became the wife of Samuel Pile, of Licking County, Ohio. The daughters of Abraham Dumbauld married: Mary, John Lohr, and died on the homestead ; Chris- tiana, Samuel Fulton, of Somerset County ; Barbara and Dolly, Joshua Davis and Jacob Miller, both of Salt Lick; and Elizabeth, Henry Phillips, of Somerset County. Before Salt Lick was erected Andrew Trapp held a commission as a justice of the peace in and for the township of Bullskin, his name appearing in that connection as early as 1796. He was also the first justice of Salt Lick. He served as a justice a number of years, but in 1810 appears the name of Richard Skinner as a justice, and later, and before 1837, Frederick Dumbauld, William Kessler, Peter Dum- l bauld, and Peter Kooser. Among other early officers of Salt Lick were the following : 1798, John Cleary and George Poe, con- stables; Abraham Dumbauld and William Kern, su- pervisors of highways ; Christian Perkey and William Smith, overseers of the poor. 1798, John Schlater and Alexander Cummings, supervisors of highways; | Henry Rush and Christian Senff, overseers of the poor. 1800, Richard Truax and Jacob Norrix, over- seers of the poor. 1801, Richard Truax and Conrad Bates, supervisors of highways ; Alexander Cum- ' mings and William Spear, overseers of the poor. Descendants of Ernst Fredrick Dumbauld Generation No. 1 1.Ernst Fredrick1 Dumbauld was born 1716 in county of Canton Berne, Switzerland, and died 1790 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He married (1) Elizabeth Hager, daughter of Jonathan Hager and Elizabeth ?.He married (2) Christina Harmon. Notes for Ernst Fredrick Dumbauld:
There appears to be a 20 year discrepenc(y) on the dates of origin in Southern France. As such the following information is what I have been able to conclude.
On or about 1651 to 1671 a Dumbauld, Vo Moulden had come from Southern France to the county of Canton Berne, Switzerland.
On or about 1716 (D) Ernst Fredrick Dumbauld, later refered(sic) to as Ernest Fredrick Dumbauld, was born in the county of Canton Berne, Switzerland. At the age of 20, Ernest emigrated to America from The Palatine, Germany on The Brigantine, "John" of Perth Amboy. At present I have no information that tells us when Ernest had left Switzerland to Germany.
The captain or master of The Brigantine was George Frazer. Embarking from Rotterdam, Holland they stopped at Dover, England for more emigrants. Also on the same ship was one Abraham Dumbauld, possibly brothers but nothing confirms this theory. There were thirty-seven foreigners from The Palatine, who with their families made a total of one hundred and ten (110).
Ernest Fredrick Dunbauld and Abraham Dunbauld were among the few who were able to write their own names. The Dumbauld name has been spelled many ways. Duimbauld and Dumbolt while living in Germany.
On October 19, 1736 the family took an oath to the gover(n)ment before lord Baltimore at Philadelphia. This was recorded at the Courthouse of Philadelphia, 168 list 43 C. Present were: Clement Plumstead Esq. Mayor of The City of Philadelphia. Thomas Laurence, Esq. and Ralph Ashton, Esq. The Dumbauld family were refered to as Palatinates. (Add'l notes omitted here) [26]
Ernest Fredrick Dumbauld First came to the region of Pipe Creek in Fredrick County Maryland. He settled in Hagerstown, Maryland where in time he married Elizabeth Hager, daughter of the founder of the town. Hagerstown, Maryland was laid out in 1761 by Captain Jonathan Hager, a German, who came to this place in 1736 and who received a patent to 200 acres from Lord Baltimore in 1739. It was incorporated in 1791 being named for Hager's wife Elizabeth Town. In January the people of the village voted to change the name to Hagerstown.
About 1766, Ernest moved with a number of emmigrants to the beautiful Ligonier Valley in Pennsylvania and laid claim by tomahawk to large tracts of land on the Four Mile Run. This was east of Chestnut Ridge and on Champion and Indian Creeks in Salt Lick Township. Today it is known as Donegal Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
This was before the Indian troubles were settled and after being in the area a short time, the Dumbaulds with others sought safety by going back to Hagerstown.
In 1769 they returned to The Ligonier Valley and erected a blockhouse on Four Mile Run to which they might flee in case of Indian attacks. This location is thought to be on the Henry Farm in The Ligonier Valley.
Ernest and his two sons, Abraham and Peter, all served in the RevolutionaryWar. Ernest served as Ranger on the Frontier and Private in the Westmoreland County Militia (Sons of The Revolution National #CA2903). The Daughters of American Revolution have admitted into membership the decendants of Abraham (D.A.R. National #271566). : Ernest Fredrick and Elizabeth (Hager) Dumbauld had eight children.
Ernest Fredrick Dumbauld married a second time to a widow, Christina Harmon, who survived his death in 1790. In a Westmoreland County will book, there is a will of Fredrick Dumbauld of Milford Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania dated December 15, 1790 and proved March 5, 1791. His second wife was mentioned but not named. Stepson Frederick Harmon and stepdaughter Barbara Harmon and children by his first wife, Barbara Robinson, Elizabeth Mackendoerser, and Rosina Schlachter were all mentioned. Lodowick Banse and John Robinson were executors.
Children of Ernst Dumbauld and Elizabeth Hager are: +2 i. Nancy2 Dumbauld, born 1751 in Hagerstown, Maryland; died February 20, 1829. +3 ii. Abraham Dumbauld, born 1753 in Hagerstown, Maryland; died March 28, 1835 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. 4 iii. Sarah Dumbauld, born 1755. 5 iv. Peter Dumbauld, born 1757 in Hagerstown, Maryland; died 1810.He married Anna Maria Boyer. (Add'l notes omitted here) 6 v. Barbara Dumbauld, born 1759. 7 vi. Elizabeth Dumbauld, born 1761. +8 vii. Rosina Dumbauld, born 1763 in Hagerstown, Maryland; died 1827. 9 viii. Anna Maria Dumbauld, born 1765.
