Military Service
Paul Dumond enlisted in the US Army as a Private (E-1) on 7 June 1978 in Caribour, Aroostook County, Maine, USA. [5] He completed Basic Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and then completed Advanced Individual Training for Military Occupational Speciality (MOS) 76P, Stock Control and Accounting Specialist, at Fort Lee, Virginia. His first tour of duty was with the 3rd Armored Division in Friedberg, Germany. In 1986 his MOS was reclassified through on the job training (OJT) to 76W, Petroleum and Water Supply Specialist. The 76W MOS was later split into separate classifications for Petroleum and Water and he retained the 76W designation for Petroleum Supply even though he had only ever worked with water. (Army logic). He began working with fuel upon his assignment to Pusan, South Korea, in July 1989. [2]
Almost immediately upon his return from Korea he deployed to Saudi Arabia on Operation Desert Shield with Headquarters, Division Support Command, 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) from Fort Stewart, Georgia. During Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm he was in charge of procuring packaged petroleum products for VII Corps. He entered Kuwait with the 24th Infantry Division on 24 February 1991 riding shotgun in a Toyota sedan (a little detail he didn't share with his wife until she asked about the picture of the car in some photos he had developed after the war). Sergeant First Class (SFC) Dumond was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service in the Persian Gulf. [2]
SFC Dumond continued to work in petroleum supply until the mid 1990s when he began working in staff positions for the 87th Support Battalion, Fort Stewart, Georgia. He served as the Training NCO, Retention NCO, and the G3 (Personnel) NCOIC before retiring as a Master Sergeant (E-8) on 30 June 1998. [5][2]
