I was born in Waterville Maine at the Sister's Hospital on College Ave. August 9, 1947. Waterville is an industrial town that attracted French Canadians, Irish, Jewish and Lebanese people. It was known for it's paper mills, woolen mills, cotton mills and iron works. The Lebanese who settled along the railroad tracks were people who could work with iron. The French Canadians worked in most of the mills. The Kennebec River was the water source for the many mills. It also established the two colleges of Thomas Business College and Colby College.

My father was of both French Canadian ancestry and English settlements from Massachusetts who all settled in the Skowhegan (Canaan) area of Maine on the Kennebec River. My mother was half Jewish from Bath Maine, and French Canadians from the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec. She is also descended from the French Lt. Officer Abbedie de Castine who married the Indian Princess of the Abenaki Iroquois Indian tribes who settled on the coast and named the town Castine, Maine. Her Jewish ancestry is from the Russian Federation countries of Lithuania and Poland.

Deborah,

Please re-read Help: Pre-1700 again. It specifically states that we must provide reliable sources when adding relationships to these profiles. Also note that the profile you connected Duncan Stewart to, Duncan Stewart, is managed by the Scotland Project. When working with Project profiles you need to first advise the profile managers that you would like to make substantive changes, provide the source record that proves the change, and then allow them to respond before making the change.

Thank you,
Bobbie

Hello Deborah,

Thanks for creating pre-1700 profiles Jasiel Smith (1700-1757) and Mary Ellingwood (1664-1750).

When we source on Wikitree, we provide sources so that others can easily follow in our footsteps and confirm our research. On these two profiles, you cited Ancestry.com, which is a repository for sources and not a source in and of itself. If your source is on Ancestry, please provide the details, such as a link to the record on ancestry you are relying upon, and since Ancestry is paywalled, it is helpful to others without a subscription if you can also transcribe the relevant details from the record you are citing.

For the location fields of a profile, on Wikitree, we use the name of the location as it was used at the time referred to, (e.g., for birth, how was the location referred to by those at the time of birth). Therefore, since the United States did not exist before July 4, 1776, USA should never be used on a date before then. You can see a table of location names by date for the United States and Colonies here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19msdf4uzxBiyIwCSNUBcrHt15Qp-DXpGxBYLp3YWDO0 So for Jasiel Smith birth born in 1700, it would be Taunton, Bristol County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, but for someone born 50 years earlier in 1650 at that location, it would have been Taunton, Bristol County, Plymouth Colony.

If you need any help with any of this, the Massachusetts Project would be a good place to start.

Let me know if any of this is unclear or you would like my help.

Thanks for your contributions to our shared tree.

Hi Deborah,

Thank you for contributing to WikiTree!

Our primary vision is to build a collaborative family tree with just one profile for each person. So please make sure to check if a person has an existing profile on WikiTree before adding them.

On the Add a Person page, you can check for existing profiles by looking through the list of profiles listed under:

’’Second, compare close matches that already exist on WikiTree.’’
’’If any of the following appear to be a match do not proceed to create the new profile. Connect the existing profile instead. ... ‘’

(For more information, see Help:Duplicates - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Duplicates#How_can_you_find_duplicates.3F )

If you notice you have accidentally created a duplicate, please initiate a merge. To find out how to merge duplicates, see Help:Merging - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Merging

Please also remember that WikiTree has stricter rules when creating profiles for people born before 1700, including a requirement to cite a reliable source. A user-contributed family tree on Ancestry.com, for example, isn't a sufficient source. See Help:Pre-1700 Profiles - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles

If you need some extra help learning how to check for duplicates, merging or adding sources, please let me know. I'm happy to help.

Hi Deborah

Thanks self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Collaboration with Pre-1700 Project members is essential for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because those ancestors are usually shared by many descendants.

It looks like the Scotland, and theUnited States Projects would be a good fit based on your branch of WikiTree. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Do you have any questions? Let me know by using the "reply" link under my comments or by clicking my name to visit my profile. From there you can leave a comment or send a private message. . I'm happy to help! :-)
