Daniel served as a soldier in the American Revolution, enlisting in the 6th Regiment of Virginia on 7 Dec 1777 in Amherst County and served as a Pvt. in Capt. CABELL's Co., Col. Joseph CROCKETT. He remained with the 7th Regiment and was at the Battle of Freeman's Farm when the British Gen. BURGOYNE was captured, in the Battle of Monmouth, and in various other engagements. He participated in SULLIVAN's campaign to Niagara after which period the Virginia Line was divided into three regiments. Daniel was then attached to Col. RUSSELL's First Regiment of the Virginia Company headed by Capt. William WHITE, also commanded by Col. BALL. He marched in this regiment to the south and remained with it until the siege and surrender of Charleston when he was captured on 12 May 1780, and held as a prisoner until 4 Mar 1781 when he was exchanged. Daniel was given an honorable discharge, after fulfilling his three year enlistment. He traveled to Richmond, VA. to file his discharge and draw his pay, this transaction is on file in the VA. State Archives in Richmond, VA. He later served and additional two years in the Militia and received his final discharge under Capt. William MOSLY. After his first tour of duty he was entitled to a bounty of 100 Acres of land from the state of VA., and was also entitled to a pension but it was not granted to him until he petitioned for it on 6 Sep 1819, at which time he was age 67 and resided in Greene Co., TN.
