Biography

The Baronetcy of Mochrum had its beginning on March 29, 1694, when James Dunbar was given the British hereditary dignity and created the first baronet of Mochrum with the honorific title of Sir.

Sir James Dunbar, born in Scotland about 1650, had an illustrious lineage as son of Thomas Dunbar (1633-1675) and grandson of John Dunbar (1598-1661). His mother was Christian Ross, daughter of Major James Ross of Balneil (County of Wigtownshire).

Sir James married Isobel Nicolson at Edinburgh parish church on February 11, 1679. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Nicolson of Carnock and Lady Margaret Livingstone. Sir James and Isobel had the following five children:

1. Christian Dunbar (born 1679) who died young.

2. Eleanora Dunbar (born 1680) who married David Lidderdale.

3. George Dunbar (bef.1683-1747) who became 2nd Baronet of Mochrum.

4. John Dunbar (born 1687) who was killed in military action for his country.

5. Christian Dunbar (born 1690) who married Thomas Douglas.

After the death of his wife Isobel, James married secondly Jane Kennedy of Minuchen, but they had no male children.

He had a charter under the Great Seal for the territorial lands of Mochrum on June 1, 1677. As noted above, he was created 1st Baronet on March 29, 1694.

Sir James Dunbar died at Mochrum in 1718 and was succeeded as Baronet by his son George Dunbar.
