James Madison Duncan was born on 15 Nov 1834 in USA, Georgia, Sumter County, son of Nathan Duncan (~1803 - ~1864) and Nancy (Hollis) Duncan (~1812 - >1870).
The couple lived in their farm in Coffee, Alabama with their first two children. [3]
Two years later, James enlisted in the Confederate Army and was assigned to 3rd Battalion, Hilliard's Legion[4] alongside Maryanne's brother, William.[5] That same year, Maryann's brother, Charles was conscripted [6] who later served in Alabama's Sixty-first infantry. He died in battle, [7] as did William. James was captured as a prisoner of war and later released.
Sometime after his discharge, the family moved to a farm in Crenshaw, Alabama where they lived in 1870. Her parents lived nearby, as did her brother, James Green Heath (abt.1831-abt.1873), and his family.[1]
In 1880, Maryanne's mother lived with them on the farm, and the couple had more children. [8]
In 1900, the couple owned a farm in Aiken, Crenshaw, Alabama Their youngest daughter, Evie, and her family lived with them. Their daughter, Nancy, and her family lived nearby. [9]
In 1901, their daughter, Nancy, passed away. Her husband subsequently died in 1910. Their young son, Henry, moved in with James and Maryanne and was living with them on the farm at the time of the census. [10]
Their marriage ended when James died on 3 Dec 1918 aged 84 after 60 years of marriage.
James died on 3 Dec 1918 in Crenshaw County, Alabama aged 84.
