Biography

Hamilton Louis Duncan (aka H.L. Duncan) son of Louis (Lewis) Duncan and Mary Nelson

H.L. Duncan was born in White County, Tennessee about 1806.[1][2] His father, Lewis Duncan, was an early settler to the area. Lewis Duncan acquired land in the newly formed Warren County there as early as 1808.[3]

The family moved to Missouri some time before 1820, and sadly, for reasons unknown, H.L. lost both his father and his uncle (John Duncan) on this journey.

Hamilton, now the head of this family, moved back to Tennessee with his mother and siblings, where they found support and help from his grandfather John Nelson, and also from a surviving uncle, William D. Duncan.

In 1826 H.L. married Margaret Wiser daughter of John Wiser and Margaret Cook.

The year 1830 finds the young family living in Warren County, TN.[4] This is the part of the county that will soon become the newly formed Coffee County in 1836, so the H.L. Duncan family didn't actually move, but county lines around them changed.

In 1840 the family is enumerated in Coffee County Tennessee. [5]

It's in 1848 that his uncle William D. Duncan dies, and Hamilton is the executor of the estate.

  • Monday May 1, 1848 This day H.L. DUNCAN admr. of William D. DUNCAN Dec’d presented a list of sale.
