Biography

James Duncan was born May 1, 1794 in Springfield, Tennessee to John Pekin Duncan, Jr and Lydia Spiller Duncan.

James enlisted in the US Army during the war of 1812 (the Blackhawk Wars) at age 18.

At age 25 he married Rebecca Herring. She died in 1830 leaving 3 children (James M., Malinda, and Susan). About 3 years later he married Huldah Jones Duncan and they moved to St.Clair County in Illinois. Together James and Huldah had 6 children (William Riley, Matilda Anne, Rebecca Jane, Hulda, John, and Frederick R.).

James had become interested in, and deeply committed to, the Mormon religion and moved near Nauvoo, Illinois.

Following the murders of Joseph and Hyrum Smith in the Carthage, Illinois jail, the Mormons were forced to flee. James Duncan and his family went with the Heber C. Kimball Company of Mormon Pioneers in 1848 when they made the trek from Winter Quarters in the Omaha (Nebraska) area to the Salt Lake City area. They left June 6 1848 and arrived at their destination on 24 September 1848. [1]

James spent the rest of his life in Bountiful, Davis, Utah, USA. He died on 4 May 1874.
