Mr Joseph Ford Duncan arrived in the ship Fifeshire on February 1,1842...After landing deceased went with his wife and three children to live in " Little Scotland " (now known as the Wood in Nelson). Their whare was composed of fern and toi-toi. Soon after Mr.Duncan went over to Riwaka, where he was employed upon the survey with the late Mr Samuel Stevens. He was one of those hard-working pioneers, who by their own perseverance and industry soon ' gained sufficient means and property to enable him and his family to live comfortably.' Deceased suffered for several years from a bronchial affection.....Deceased leaves an aged widow....also eight children.....sixty grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.[10]
