Discrepancy

No original source records have been located to confirm birth, marriage or death records. It appears that some erroneous information may have been published, and perhaps republished/reported, making the “actual facts” obscure. There is a great deal of conflicting information surrounding William – Many Source-to-Source discrepancies; co-mingling, Lack of records; conflicting family stories; number of Duncan’s with the same names, etc.

  • Several name variations -- Duncane, Duncanne, Dunkin
  • Children for John Duncan and Jonet Andro are lacking source documents. (Births Estimated between 1551 to 1575)
  • Lineage Needs To Be Proven
  • Unproven family relationships.
  • Only Sources for the connection to William Duncan and Susan Haldane are:
  1. Comparison of Sources Summary
  2. VanDyke Bible (Thomas of Cumberland) (the inference is that Wm and Jonat are the Parents of William I m. Haldane '(". . . .And William also was a son of William and Janet who survived him. ")
  • Date Discrepancies -- Birth vs Death - Possibly William [1] married 2X – (1 Haldane 1636 & 2 Mcarthur 1647)

Speculation

Jonat MacArthur married William Duncan (Minister) as 2nd wife; (about 1642)
  1. Possibly Minister of Kilpatrick and William Duncan/Haldane represent same individual - VanDyke Bible infers William and Jonet are parents of William m. Haldane (separate individuals - may be in error - may in fact be missing generation (date discrepancies)
  2. William (presumed son of John/Andro) also married a Jonet Unknown; and is presumed father of [[Duncan-3192 | William Duncan I/Haldane])
  3. William who m. Margaret Forbes --may be parents of William Duncan/Haldane or Forbes as another spouse)

Paternal Line Speculation

John m. Andro

  • William m. Forbes (b. 1570's)

William b. 1590's m. McArthur
William b. 1613 m. Haldane

Biography

William Duncan is a member of Duncan Clan.

William Duncan (the presumed son of John and Jonat Andro. (Unproven) Estimated Birth 1575-1610 (Petlocey, Cupar) Scotland
Marriage Estimate 1595 -1630

if Jonat is a 2nd wife; marriage about 1647 [1] [2]

Death Estimate Unknown, 1688 = probably before 1700; possibly Dundee, Dumfries (or Sterling) Scotland [2]

  • William Duncan married Jonat MacArthur (Possibly the Minister of Kilpatrick)

Children

Children of Presumed Parents William Duncan and Jonet MacArthur Identified in Sasines and Fasti records:

William Duncan Minister of New Kilpatrick

Mr. William (New Kilpatrick) was documented in the Fasti; confirms spouse as Jonet MacArthur. [ b. 1627 d. . 1692 (age 65) [m estimate abt 1647] Janet McArthur ] (Vol 3 p.356)

“William, M.A. b about 1627 King’s Coll., Aberdeen; M.A. 1648/ Asst. Auchindoir 21 Oct. 1652 – 1653. Kildrummy (before) 18 July 1666-1689. Driven from his charge in 1689, d. 1692. Married Janet Macarthur, and had issue — William ; probably also Alexander, min. of Kilbirnie. — [Reg. Old Dec, iii. ; Rule's Sec. Vindication ; Argyll Sas., ii., 254.] .:”

Further documentation showed “William's furniture was thrown out of the Manse and he himself had to flee for his life”. [The Scottish expression "cast out of the living"] This appears to be a commonality among William’s descendants

Son, Alexander (the Bishop) and Alexander’s son Robert (a Minister), were all “outed by the people”. It does seem feasible that this may be the basic reason for the migration to the US. – They may not have all been Brothers – but a combination of families (and/or children) which were “related”, thus accounting for the various traditional “common stories & ancestors” and possibly date errors in the bibles.[2][6]

The lands of Lochbrae were a part of the 'five-pound land' of Killermont, so the lands of Lochbrae are a tenth part of the lands of Killermont. Land-holding in Scotland since about the year 1150 has been by 'feudal tenure'.
