Biography

John was christened at Strachan Parish in Kincardineshire, Scotland on 9 June 1839.

A letter of 1936 written by John's nephew Alfred states that John was struck by lightning while asleep in his bed at Strachan.

Research

It is unknown when the lightning strike occurred or even whether this was the right brother. Alfred's letter has solid information about his siblings, but while most of what he writes about his aunts and uncles can be corroborated with other documents, he mistook his aunt who married Mr. Stratton for Nancy rather than Margaret.

Alfred reports learning of the lightning strike from a clipping out of an Aberdeen newspaper. Historical newspaper records should be searched for this record.
