On Familysearch, they have his name listed as Matthew F. Duncan.
No original source records have been located to confirm birth or marriage records. It appears that some erroneous information may have been published, and perhaps republished/reported, making the “actual facts” obscure . These dates need further research/clarification before taken as "fact" Please see the e-mail below:
E-mail sent to me (Brenda Duncan) from Tom Parsons, my cousin:
Yes, my first cousin Mark Duncan did the y-DNA test and he tested 37/37 matches with a couple of Duncans, and 36/37 and 35/37 matches with a number of other Duncans. This was confirmed by Stephanie Robertson of the Clan Donnachaidh DNA Project. See www.clandonnachaidhdna.org . Mark is in Duncan Group B which is connected to the colonial line of Marshall Duncan in VA. Like me, Mark is descended from Ezekiel Smith Duncan, William Joseph Duncan, Mathew Duncan. His y-DNA proves Mathew Duncan is descended from Marvel Duncan b. 17 Oct 1795 Blount, TN d. 25 Aug 1863 Blount, TN. So, yes we have solid proof of the connection between Mathew and Marvel.
Our line of Duncans originated in the isle of Bute in west Scotland. We are in England now and I had planned to visit there, but it appears there is nothing much to see. I am going to Pitlochry in Scotland where the Clan Donnachaidh Society is located. There is a museum to visit. I am not sure what will be there but will let you know if it is interesting. We go the first week of June.
Hope all is well with you.
Mathew (or Matthew) Duncan. Note: I've seen his name as "Matthew F." leaving for now in hopes this will help in the research but have not seen this myself.
Mathew was born in 1818, to Marvel Duncan and Sallie Duncan and was married to Mary Ann Polly Duncan. They had three sons. Mathew passed away in 1875 at the age of 57 in Alabama. [[1]]
Spouse: Mary Ann "Polly" Kirby. Since Matthew was 32 and she was 20, he was probably married before.
I think they were tied to this family in some way.[2]
Note: I believe NC is incorrect but I'm not 100% certain. This 1850 Census does show he was born in Tennessee.
This was a post made by Tom Parsons on ancestry.com: I saw your post and I am also at a dead-end on researching my Duncans. My oldest ancestor is a Mathew Duncan b. abt 1820 in NC d. abt 1875 in Jackson County, AL. He had three sons, Marvel Duncan b.1847, John L. Duncan b. 1850, and my ancestor William Joseph Duncan b. May 1852 in Ozark, AR. Marvel also moved to AR where both he and William died near Hot Springs, AR. Mathew was married to Polly S. Kirby b. abt 1820 in NC. Mathew was also in Missouri abt 1850.
Note: On Ancestry.com, they have Martha Duncan listed as a child with no sources.
Note on Genealogy.com: I am looking for the parents of Matthew DUNCAN b abt 1818 TN, who married Polly Unknown b abt 1830 TN, in about 1847.They are in the 1850 census of Ozark Co., MO. He is 32 and she is 20, so I suspect that he was previously married. This is the only census record I can find on them.
I have not been able to find a record of their marriage, but I have been told that she was Polly KIRBY. Their first child was Marvel Garret Duncan born Aug 17,1847 MO.His brother was John L. Duncan born 1850 Ozark Co., MO. I believe that John is the same person who md. Mary Melinda TURNER on Feb 1, 1874 in Calhoun Co, AR.
In 1870 Marvel and his wife, Nancy Jane SHIRLEY, lived in Clark Co., AR, where they married June 19, 1870. In 1880 they are in Calhoun Co., AR with children: William M. age 9; Sabra Ann age 7 (md. John Ledbetter); Luella age 5; Martha (Mattie) age 3; and Wiley age 6/12. Marvel's brother, John, is there too, with wife, Mary M., and daughters: Mildred L. and Laura.
I believe that Marvel's son, Wiley, may be the George W. Dunkin in the 1900 census of Hot Springs, AR, Bismark Twp. Wife was Lillie B., children: James B, Lawrence E. and Rosie L.
Marvel and Nancy are in the 1900 census of Hot Springs Co., AR, Bismark Twp. Children living at home then were: Mary M. b Mar 1882; Nettie L. b Oct 1884; and Charles Edward b Sept 1887.
Charles Edward Duncan md. Mary Ann PHILLIPS in 1905 Clark Co., AR.
I have been told by several researchers that either Matthew or Polly, or both, were Native American. Note: I've been told all my life that I have relatives that are Native American Indians but have found no proof of this so far. Brenda
