Elihu was born in 1867. He is the illegitimate son of John Henderson Payne and Louisa Ellen Duncan.
A contributor recently sent this information: Elihu Hartley Duncan is the illegitimate son of Louisa Ellen Duncan daughter of John T. Duncan. His father was actually John Henderson (Jack) Jack Payne. Mr. Payne was connected to the Hammontree family residing in McLeansboro, IL at the time he was conceived. The Hammontrees and Duncans most likely came together from Monroe Co. TN to Hamilton County just prior to the outbreak of the Civil War.
