Biography
Francis Duncan was the child of George Duncan, a coalier (who may have been born ca 1732) and Jean Cahown (who may have been born ca 1732).
He was born in the village of Penston, in the parish of Gladsmuir, in the county of East Lothian, in Scotland on 13 August 1765. He was the second child to be given that name, the elder presumably having died before his birth. [1]
He was baptised in Gladsmuir on 25 August 1765 by the Revd. Mr. Francis Cowan, minister of Gladsmuir with witnesses George Duncan & Willm. Duncan, Coaliers in Penston. [1]
He had two brothers:
John Duncan (born 1753)
Francis Duncan (born 12 July 1762)
and at least one sister:
Marion Duncan (born ca 1755).
His wife was Clementina Currie (born ca 1764).
He had five children with Clementina Currie:
Maitland (or Matilda) Duncan (Baptised 06 February 1785)
Williamina Duncan (Baptised 18 March 1787)
Ann Duncan (Baptised 15 November 1789),
William Duncan (Born ca 1791)
Jean Duncan (Baptised 03 December 1793).
He was living in the parish of Airth, Stirlingshire, Scotland on 06 February 1785 at the time of the baptism of his daughter, Mathilda, on 18 March 1787 when his daughter Williamina was baptised and on 15 November 1789 when his daughter Ann was baptised.
He was living in the parish of Larbert, Stirlingshire, Scotland on 03 December 1793 when his daughter Jean was baptised.
He was living in the village of Macmerry, in the parish of Gladsmuir,in the county of East Lothian, Scotland on 06 June 1841 when the 1841 census was taken. He was 75 years old at this time.
He appears to have died before the time of the 1851 census.
His wife Clementina Currie appears to have died before the 1841 census was taken.
