Introduction

This Dunham line descends from Jonathan Dunham, alias Singletary, s/o Richard Singletary whose descendants are known as Dunham, Donham, & Dunnam.

Richard 1 Singletary (d. 25 Oct 1687 Haverhill, Massachusetts); likely m. (1) Goodwife Singletary, perhaps known as Lydia Downham, believed by some researchers to be mother of Jonathan Dunham, alias Singletary. Richard Singletary married likely (2) Susanna Cooke who may have been Jonathan Dunham, alias Singletary's mother instead of the Goodwife Singletary.
Jonathan 2 Dunham, alias Singletary; married Mary Bloomfield.
David 3 Dunham married 1669 to Mary Ilsee/Ilsley. [1][2]
Joseph 4 Dunham (aka Joseph 4 Donham) (1700-1771). [3] [4]
Wife of Joseph4 Dunham/Donham not named in his will. [Researchers name different wives.]

Do be careful as you connect this Joseph 5 Dunham to his said wife, Hannah Conyer/Conger, to his children and to his family.

There were two Joseph 5 Dunham men who were second cousins.
Both men married wives named Hannah and their families have been merged at times.

Biography

JOSEPH 5 DUNHAM, s/o Joseph4 Dunham (aka Donham) and unknown mother, is given as born 1735 in Westfield Township, Essex County (now Union County), New Jersey, but there is no vital reference/source that validates birth date or place. [5]

His father (Joseph4Dunham/Donham) is verified in the given will above where son, Joseph5, is named. [6] Joseph4 Dunham's will does not name his surviving wife, nor deceased children, but does name at least the living children who were legatees.

"1759, Oct. 20. Donham, Joseph, of Woodbridge, Middlesex Co.; will of. Wife to have the use of land. Son, Daniel, 1/6 of my lands, joining the 1/2 acre where he lives. Rest of estate to be sold. Daughter, Sarah, a prayer book. Youngest daughters, Abigail and Phebe, 25 £ (pounds, British currency). Youngest sons, James, Joseph, Elisha, Moses and Jonathan, rest of my money. Wife to bring up my children. Executors - friend, Ebenezer Foster, and sons, Joseph and Elisha. Witnesses: Jonathan Cambell, Amos Donham, Nathaniel Fitz Randolph.[7]
[Note: Witness, Amos5 Donham, was Joseph4 Dunham's nephew, son of his brother, David4 Dunham, Jr. and Mary (Freeman) Dunham].[8]

Joseph5 Dunham's mother is presently not found nor validated, and several researchers have their theories. Joseph5 is given as the son of Joseph4 Dunham/Donham and perhaps Elizabeth Mary Maris, aka Bloomfield by some researchers per the WikiTree profile link. Other researchers name his mother as Elizabeth Woods, b 1705, and others. His son, Joseph6 Dunham married into the Woods family in Warren Co., OH, so perhaps there is a family connection to Elizabeth Woods.

Joseph5 Dunham married 1757 to said Hannah Conger/Conyer. [9]

circa 1776 Revolutionary War Years
Different references give the likelihood that it was Joseph5 Dunham, s/o Joseph4 Dunham/Donham, who was the Private from New Jersey during the Revolutionary War. [10]

His military record is likely correct as it is found in various other Revolutionary records, but birth, death, and burial could be incorrect, and needs vital records to validate.

DUNHAM, JOSEPH. b ????, New Jersey, d 1790 likely Essex Co., NJ, m. ????, Hannah Conyer or Conger, b ????, d. ????.

SERVICE: Joseph Dunham, of Essex Co., NJ served as Private in the NJ Militia; received certificate 641 amounting to 12.10.0 £ [British currency] for the depreciation of his Continental pay in the Essex Co., NJ Militia, during the Revolutionary War.[11]

Text from Myers, p. 542: "Joseph, possibly the Joseph Dunham b. 1735, d. 1790, m. Hannah Conyer and was Private from N.J. in Rev. War (DAR Patriot Index)". [12]

It does not appear that the Joseph and Hannah given by many as buried at the Presbyterian Church Graveyard are this Joseph5 Dunham and Hannah (Conger/Conyer) Dunham. It is likely that after serving in the Revolutionary War they perhaps went into Pennsylvania or the Miami Valley of Ohio which became Warren Co., OH where their known children are found. Joseph perhaps received land as a result of his Revolutionary War service.[13]

Joseph5 Dunham died 1790, but reference burial site for him and said wife, Hannah (Conger/Conyer) Dunham is not found and not given. [14]

Again, children of both Joseph5 Dunhams have been mixed, as both contain some children with the same given names.

Known Children of Joseph 5 and said Hannah Conger/Conyer:

1. John 6 Dunham died in Westfield, Essex Co. (Union Co.), NJ.

2. Joseph 6 Dunham, said born 29 August 1766 Westfield, Essex County, New Jersey (no record to prove); d 8 March 1846 at 79y at Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio; buried Bethany Christian Church Cemetery in Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio. He is said to have married 16 March 1790 in Westfield, Essex County (now Union County, New Jersey) to Hannah "Anna" Wood, dau/o John Wood (1727-1815) & Abigail Margaret King (1738–1776). Again there is no vital reference given to prove the marriage in NJ. He is not the Joseph 6 Dunham who married Mary "Polly" Miller and went to Hamilton Co., OH.

3. Phoebe 6 Dunham (1770-1838) is given as a daughter by Katherine (Lollar) Rowland). Phoebe married (1) David Lollar I (1767-1807). Katherine indicates they married 15 December 1792 Westfield, Essex Co. (Union Co.), New Jersey to (2) Unknown McChristy. The Lollar surname could have been spelled Lawler. It is given that they left New Jersey in 1795 for the Miami Valley of Ohio which became Warren Co., OH near Lebanon.[15] Mrs. Rowland indicates she comes from the line of Cranes, Thornhills, & Bloomfields. More works needs to be done to prove her parents & connections as she names them. It is proven from records that Joseph5 Dunham (the cousin), & his wife, Hannah Unknown descends from those same surname lines.

4.David 6 Dunham went to Warren Co., OH.

Research Notes

"Phoebe Jane Robertson, the great-great-granddaughter of Joseph Dunham, Rev. Soldier" is accredited with the Revolutionary Roster accounting, but does not validate where the information was found for birth date, birthplace, marriage, death death, & death place. She erroneously connects this Joseph5 Dunham to a Thomas Dunham of the Deacon John Dunham lineage, instead of with Joseph 4 Dunham of Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., NJ, line of Jonathan Dunham, alias Singletary. [What else did she get wrong in this accounting? Did she and other researchers confuse the Joseph5 Dunham, son of David4 Dunham, of Westfield Township, NJ with her Joseph5 Dunham? ash]

There is one other reference tag error someplace in here as I was data doctoring the other day I fixed one.... can't seem to find the other. It's making the source section (which is extensive) not show up.
