Biographical Sketch:

ELMIRA DUNHAM (aka Almira Dunham) was the daughter of James Dunham and Anna Sands. She was born about 1837 perhaps in Miami County or Darke County, Ohio.[1]

Elmiria (sic-Elmira) Dunham and Harmon A. Reunnecke (sic-Kunnecke) were issued a Darke County, Ohio marriage certificate on 8 July 1859; the couple married 14 July 1859 Darke County, Ohio by S. B. Abbott, M.G.

Harman & Elmira were enumerated:
1860 Federal Census [2]
Darke County, Ohio
Brown Township
P. O.: Greenville
20 July 1860
88-89
H. A. Kunneck, 27y, miller, b Hanover
Emilia (sic-Elmira), 23, b OH
Cyrus Rogers, 20, miller, b PA

Her husband, Harmon A. Kunnecke, was a Civil War Cavalry Volunteer mustering in on 24 March 1864; sent to Camp Dennison in Hamilton County, Ohio, and was wounded and died 19 June 1864 at the Battle of Liberty in Virginia. In a letter home, Elmira's brother, James Dunham, wrote letters home to his wife, Margaret Elizabeth Slonaker, mentioning Harman.[3]

Elmira's Widow's Claim #58647 was under the name of Elmira (Dunham) Keunnecke for service of Harmon A. Keunnecke (sic), Co. M, 8th Regiment, Ohio. (Fold3_Page 2)

Application 78813
M 8 Regt. Ohio Cavalry

Widow Certificate # 58647

Elmira's Widow's Claim #58647 was under the name of Elmira (Dunham) Keunnecke for service of Harmon A. Keunnecke, Co. M, 8th Regiment, Ohio. (Fold3_Page 2)

A Claim for Widow's Pension for Elmira Keunnecke of Webster, OH . Proof Exhibited: Pension # 58647. Records show Harman (sic) Keunnecke (sic), mustered 24 March 1864; probably wounded and killed at Liberty, Virginia on 19 June 1864. Marriage Proof: Copy of Marriage Record submitted. Recorded that there were no children. (Fold3_Page 3)

On 27 December 1864 Elmira Keunnecke of Wayne Township, Darke County, Ohio (Post Office: Versailles) appeared before a Darke County, Ohio Probate Court giving details of her husband's plight. She indicated she was 27 years of age, the widow of Harmon A. Kunnecke (sic). She stated that he left no children. Commenced 19 June 1864. Issued 27 October 1865, $8.00 per annum. (Fold3_Page 4)

Witnesses to Elmira's Declaration on 27 December 1864 were Mary Jane Dunham & Sarah Hathaway. (Fold3_Page 5) Mary Jane Dunham was Civil War widow of James Dunham [Jr.]. Sarah Hathaway was likely Sarah Ann (Sands) Hathaway, an aunt to Elmira and thus perhaps a sister to Anna (Sands) Dunham (wife of James Dunham, Sr.)

A widow's claim by Elmira (Dunham) Keunnecke for pension was filed 13 June 1865 giving details of her husband's plight. Elmira, 27 years old, indicated her husband was shot and killed on 25 July 1864. She resided in Webster Township, Darke County, Ohio. She indicated a daughter, Malinda Elnora Kunnecke was born 1 May 1860, but that the child is no longer living, and that there were no other children. Witnesses included: Sarah Hathaway [mentioned above] and D. H. R. Jobes, Judge. (Fold3_Page 6)

No other information has yet been found concerning Elmira (Dunham) Kunnecke, as she seems to have disappeared after this record. However, with so many variants of her husband's surname, perhaps she can be found in later records in time. (ash 2019)

Child of Harman A. Kunnecke and Elimira Dunham:

1. Malinda Elnora Kunnecke (born 1 May 1860 in Webster Township, Darke Co., OH; d by 1865.)

Notes

Harman's surname is found in records as Keunnecke, Keunecke, Kunneck, Kunnecke, Reinecke, Reunnecke.

Harman is mentioned in a letter from James Dunham, Jr. to his wife, Margaret (nee Slonaker) Dunham when James was stationed in Ohio prior to Civil War service. [4] Harman and his brothers-in-law, James Dunham and Henry Dunham, died while serving in the Civil War.
