Biography

George W. Rowlison, 23, and Agnes C. Dunham, 19, were married on 24 October 1894 in Pittsford, Hillsdale, Michigan. George, a farmer, was born about 1871 in Michigan, the son of Elliott Rowlison and Catherine Bohner. Agnes was born about 1875 in New York, the daughter of Levant Dunham and Mary McGahan.[1]

In 1910, the Rowlison family lived in their rented house at 425 Washington, Circleville, Pickaway, Ohio. The family included George W. Rowlison, 38, born in Michigan, an Evangelical Church minister; his wife of fifteen years, Agnes C., 35, born in New York, who had had four children, all of whom were living; their children, the eldest three in school: Ernest, 14, b. Michigan; Sylvester, 10, b. MI; Myrtle, 7, b. Ohio; and Adella, 6, b. OH.[2]

In 1920, the Rowlison family lived in a rented house in Graviot County, Michigan. The household included George W. Rowlison, 48, a Baptist clergyman; his wife, Agnes C., 45; their children, Sylvester A., 20, a telegraph lineman; Myrtle B., 17, in school; and Adella M., 15, in school.[3]

In 1930, the Rowlisons lived in Bloomingdale, Van Buren, Michigan. They owned their house, valued at $2000. George W. Rowlison, 58, not a military veteran, was a Methodist minister. His wife, Agnes C., was 55.[4]

In 1940, the Rowlisons lived on Willow Street in Bloomingdale, Van Buren, Michigan. They owned their house, valued at $1000., and had lived there for at least five years. George W. Rowlison, 68, was a cemetery Sexton, had worked 20 weeks in 1939, earning $150, also had an outside income, and had completed three years of high school. His wife, Agnes, 65, had completed the eighth grade.[5] A cemetery Sexton is a church or cemetery manager, who may be in charge of grounds management, record keeping, performing/overseeing internments, among other duties. In olden days, the Sexton would have also been the grave digger.[6]
