Duncan II overthrew his uncle Donald III with English help but Donald regained the throne when Duncan was killed in battle or murdered.
Duncan spent most of his adult life as a hostage in England. With English help in 1094 he siezed the throne from his uncle, Donald Bane, but was killed within months after. And his infant son didn't come into the reckoning as his successor. For a few years Duncan's half-brother Edmund shared the rule with Donald before Edgar made it to the throne being supported by the English and Duncan's son William.
Duncan II, according to the chronicles, was murdered by Malpeder MacLoen, the mormaer of the Mearns, at monachedin (Mondynes) in 1094. (http://www.auchenblae.net/strathfinella.htm)
His son by Ethelreda, William fitz Duncan was a prominent figure during the reigns of Duncan's half-brothers Alexander and David. William was an acknowledged heir to them for part of their reigns.
The only surviving charter of Duncan II granted Tynninghame and its surrounding area to the monks of Durham.
