Biography

Horace was born in 1800. Parents John Dunlap and Betsey were named.^[1]

Horace married Lucy Preston on 15 January 1827 in Connecticut, United States.^[2] There is also a Barbour record placing this marriage in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut in 1826. The name Esek Brown is shown, but with no indication of why.^[3]

The 1850 census shows the couple in Buffalo, New York with four of their children.^[4]

The 1860 census has mostly the same group, now in Alexandria Township, Leavenworth, Kansas. Horace (60) is a farmer. Son Horace (16 in 1850) has been replaced by Henry (22 in 1860). Michael Dunlap (19, Illinois, laborer) is listed last, and is 3 years older than Charlotte. He may be a relative or a hired hand with the same name.^[5]

The 1865 census shows that William is a soldier in regiment 18, company "Mo." The oldest son appears to have moved on. Horace is Co assessor.^[6]

By 1870 Horace is widowed, living with daughter Charlotte (Lottie). Horace is city assessor, Lottie is a school teacher, and they have a housekeeper.^[7]

Horace died in 1873.^[8]

Research Note

Two of Horace's sons provide a bit of a mystery. Henry appears in the 1860 census at 22, but not in 1850. Horace appears at 16 in 1850, but not in 1860. Francis, William, and Charlotte age exactly 10 years as expected. Henry and Horace appear to be two separate people, and trees online show them with different wives and children. But where was Henry in 1850?

There are several possibilities.

• Henry was a nickname for Horace, and there was a careless error in his age at one census.
• Henry was living with a different family in 1850 and Horace has moved to his own home by 1860. There was at least one census record of a Henry Dunlop of the right age in Connecticut with a family with a different surname.
• In either case, some of the trees showing information for both Henry and Horace may be combining information from men from other families.
