Biography

Thomas's headstone lists his date of birth as 1816;[1] census records list it as anywhere between 1825 and 1828 in Pennsylvania.[2][3][4]

St. John's German Evangelical Churchbook for Canal Dover, Ohio lists a death record for "Tomas Donlap" and indicates that he was born in 1823 in Mt. Pleasant, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, died on July 18, 1896 in Canal Dover, Ohio, and was buried on July 21 of that year.[5] Thomas Dunlap was not German, but his second wife was, and their marriage record is also listed in this book.

Thomas was married to Lydia Ann (maiden name is thought to be May or Mays), possibly in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in or around 1853 (according to Ancestry and FamilySearch trees; no primary sources have yet been located).

Thomas and Lydia had four sons:

The Dunlap family lived in Brady's Bend, Pennsylvania until after Samuel was born in 1858. By the time John was born in 1860, they had moved to Massillon, Ohio.[2] By 1865, they had moved to Canal Dover, Ohio, where they remained for the rest of Thomas's life.[3]

In 1878 (presumably after Lydia's death), Thomas married Sarah Böhinger Leichthammer. [6][7][8]

His occupation is listed as "Furnace Laborer" in the 1860 census, "works at furnace" in the 1870 census, and "laborer" in the 1880 census.

Thomas passed away about 1895-1896 and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Dover, Ohio.[9][1]

Research Notes

The 1860 census record is the earliest record located by the profile manager for Thomas so far; little is known yet about his life prior to 1860. Stories passed down from family members indicate that the Dunlaps were of Scots Irish descent (not yet verified).
