Alexander (Dunlop) Dunlop of Keppoch was born in Scotland.
Alexander (Dunlop) Dunlop of Keppoch is a member of Clan Dunlop.
Birth
Alexander was born on 12 Mar 1766 and baptized on 21 Mar 1766 in the Church of Scotland: Parish Church of Greenock. His parents are recorded as John Dunlop, Tide Surveyor in Greenock and Jean Fisher.[1][2] Alexander came from an old distinguished Glasgow family, the Hills. His great grandfather was William Dunlop, Principal of the University of Glasgow. His grandfather was Alexander Dunlop, Professor of Greek at the University of Glasgow and his father John Dunlop was a significant public servant.[3]
Marriages and Children
Alexander and Janet Graham were married on 10 Nov 1788. The marriage register records show Alexander was a merchant residing in the Parish of Old Greenock, which is where Janet's grandmother's relatives also lived. Janet co- heiress of Gairbraid was from the Barony Parish of Glasgow. [4][3]
Janet died on 7 Jun 1795 at the age of 26 leaving her husband with 4 children all under the age of 6. She is buried at Inverkip Street Cemetery in Greenock.[9][3]
Alexander and Margaret Colquhoun were married on 24 Sep 1796. The marriage register records show Alexander, merchant, from the Parish of Old Greenock and Margaret from the Parish of Port Glasgow[10]
Margaret died after 1813. She was the daughter of William Colquhoun 6th of Kenmure and Judith Dun Thibou.
Renfrewshire Bank
Alexander was a merchant and banker involved in the Renfrewshire Bank in Greenock, he was 1 of 9 of the original founders. The Renfrewshire Bank founded in 1802 in a house in Greenock, and in time it had branches in Inverary, Campbeltown, Port Glasgow and Glasgow. The bank even published its own banknotes. In April 1842 the Renfrewshire Bank stopped all payments causing widespread panic, the 2 remaining partners declared bankruptcy. William Naper one of the remaining partners sold his estate of Blackstone in order to pay off debts. The death of Alexander may have greatly attributed to the banks downfall which had long lasting effects for many local people.[23]
Death & Burial
Alexander died 17 Dec 1840[24]at the age of 74 in the Keppoch House outside Cardross township in Cardross parish, Scotland. He outlived 2 wives and had 15 children. Will and Testament for Alexander in Dumbarton Sheriff Court.[25] The will was written by Patrick Graham, clerk and dated 18 Dec 1823. An addendum was executed 15 Sep 1828 at the Keppoch House. The executors were John Dunlop, Alexander Dunlop, Alan Colquhoun Dunlop and John Cadell.
Research Notes
A search across the Church of Scotland Old Parish Registers and Family Search Indexes from 1760 to 1820 showed no siblings to Alexander.
A search across the Church of Scotland Old Parish Registers and Family Search Indexes from 1786 to 1796 showed no other children born to Alexander and Janet Dunlop.
A search across the Church of Scotland Old Parish Registers did not find any records pertaining to Henry Liston and Robina Liston. However, they are listed on Family Search indexes as well as on the memorial for John Dunlop at the Inverkip Street Cemetery in Greenock.
Margaret (Colquhoun) Dunlop's WikiTtree profile marks her death as 15 Aug 1818. I have found 2 different dates of death one in 1818 and one in 1840 with no credible sources to back it up.
Alexander's estate was valued around £14,000 and the 5 main items of his estate were the Keppoch House and 4 parcels of land. A special ongoing benefit of £50 at Whitsun and Martinmas to Miss Jane Carns (possible governess to Alexander's daughters). With the real estate to be converted into money with equal shares going to the living children at the time of his death. Alexander left his books, pictures, paintings, watch and family relics to John Dunlop, 1st born son.
The addendum was for special arrangements for his daughter Helen, who was to marry Rev. Robert Stone, Roseneath Parish, and the trustee appointed was John Cadell, to provide a trust for Helen's children. Witnessed by Robert Graham Dunlop, Commander in the Royal Navy.
While researching Alexander "Dunlop of Keppoch", a question was brought forward about the use "of Keppoch" since there did not seem to be a line "of Keppoch". A G2G forum question was asked. After information that was in response to my question, I was able to confirm that using "Dunlop of Keppoch" as the CLM is consistent with Scotland project guidance:

Dunlop-1590 and Dunlop-1227 appear to represent the same person because: The father and mother of Dunlop-1589 (Alan Colquhoun Dunlop) were definitely an Alexander Dunlop and a Margaret Colquhoun ("Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTNY-C8K : 10 February 2018), Alan Colquhoun Dunlop, 31 May 1800; citing , reference - 2:17KG7JP, index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 1,041,063.).
There is only one possible marriage that I can discover within a viable date range between two people of those names and that is between Colhoun-113 and an Alexander Dunlop. ("Scotland Marriages, 1561-1910," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYQN-ZZP : 10 February 2018), Alexander Dunlop and Margaret Colhoun, 24 Sep 1796; citing West Or Old Parish,Greenock,Renfrew,Scotland, index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 1,041,063, 102,060.). Given that the pronunciation of Colquhoun is not phonetic the difference in spelling seems unproblematic. In addition the baptism and the wedding are both in Greenock, Renfrewshire.
In addition, the will of William Dunlop, quoted and linked to on the profile of Helen Boyle Dunlop (Dunlop-1229) refers to a brother, Alan C. Dunlop, which is likely to be Dunlop-1589.
Therefore it seems likely that these two Alexander Dunlop profiles represent the same person.
