Biography

Amy was born about 1774. She is the daughter of Thomas Dunn and Elizabeth Johnson.

Research Notes

Thomas and Elizabeth then moved back to Sheringham, where both daughters Amy and Elizabeth were born. Both were baptised in All Saints Sheringham Norfolk. Amy was born in 12th July 1774 and baptised on 17th July. Elizabeth was born and baptised on 25th September 1776 but was not long for this world. She was buried in Blakeney on 30th November that same year.

Amy was living in Cley, a mile or so from Blakeney when she had her first child, also Thomas. The name of the father is lost in the mists of time, and the (private) baptism entry for Thomas on 7th September 1794 cruelly adds ‘base born’. It was 5 years before Amy before she married a cousin, William Johnson, at Blakeney on 27th September 1799.

Amy’s 1st legal husband was probably the William Johnson baptised in Blakeney on 7th December 1777, son of John Johnson and Ann. His father, John (b.1737 Blakeney), was Amy’s maternal uncle, being one of 4 brothers of her mother Elizabeth nee Johnson. He was also a witness to his son’s marriage to Amy. Despite this marriage, 5-year-old Thomas kept his mother’s surname – Dunn. Amy and William Johnson had one known son – though the long gap before he was born may indicate earlier tragedies…. William Johnson jnr. was born 10th June 1804 and baptised on 17th June, but he lived only a few months and was buried on 3rd October 1804. Only two years later tragedy hit Amy again – her husband William died and was buried in Blakeney on 14th November 1806.

Amy went on to marry again - to Thomas Alcock on 31st March 1807 in St Nicholas, Blakeney, Norfolk. This union was blessed with two offspring, Elizabeth Alcock (born on 4th May 1808) and Sarah Alcock (born on 7th June 1810) - both in Blakeney. There is little information to hand about these two daughters. Thomas Alcock died in July 1830. Amy, after a full and varied life was buried in Cley in February 1843.
