Biography

Waters Dunn, Sr. b. 1725, Essex Co. VA d. 1803, Columbia Co. GA. m. (1) Sarah Gatewood b. 1728, Essex Co. VA. d. 1785, Henry Co. VA. Her parents: Patience Reeves and Richard Gatewood. m. (2) 1786, in Georgia, Ann Ferguson.

Son Richard and other members of the Waters Dunn family were in Henry County, Colonia Virginia in 1777. see:Richard Dunn in Colonial Virginia

Waters Dunn Sr was among the slaveowners who lived in Columbia County, Georgia.

Copied from Columbia Co. GA. early Court Records dtd. January 1802: “Waters Dunn Sr. to Wm. Dunn 4 slaves & 5 shillings the said Wm. shall let Milly Satterwhite, wife of WM. Satterwhite, receive all profits arising from labor of slaves. Increase of said slaves to go to Sally, William, Jr., Thomas b. c. 1769, Betsey, Nancy and Polly at the death of Milly; children of WM. and Millicent Dunn Satterwhite.” In 1805, William Dunn b. 1765 VA., was appointed guardian for Mills Satterwhite. (The above mentioned William Dunn is son of Waters and brother of Milly Dunn; he was b. 1765 VA. William m. 18 Dec 1788 GA., Anne Thompson) Obviously Mills is Milly. She had to have a guardian because of old laws concerning women and property.

(Need record showing the names of the enslaved people referenced above.)

Note the following record occurred prior to the filing of the will of Waters Dunn. [1] Dec 3 1802. r/Jan 24 1803. Deed of Gift. WATERS DUNN to THOMAS RICHARDSON (son-in-law) Negro girl named Vilet, Negro boys, Lewis and James; woman, Winny, Isaac and Silvy.

The Dunn and Kinnebrew families were very intermarried. The following was created as a tool for keeping clear the players and the generations.

Slaves

The will of Waters Dunn Sr, as quoted above, was written in 1800. In it he names the following enslaved people. (Note there are variations in translation/indexing.)

Jamey/Jansey to Wife Ann, after her death return to estate
Silver/Silvia to Wife Ann, after her death return to estate
Winny to Wife Ann, after her death return to estate

This does not correlate precisely with those included in the appraisal of his estate:

1803 Inventory of Waters Dunn Sr
Jacob a man 450
Isaac 450
Will 450
Jim 450
Winny 350

Due to the partial overlap of names, this may also be in conflict with an 1802 deed, written after the will. See details above of this deed of gift to his son in law Thomas Richards.

Defaults: if described as a boy or girl, a birthdate of before 1795 will be used. Reasoning, a child less than five usually stayed with the mother.
Without an age descriptor, a birthyear estimated at 1780 would be used, yeilding about 20 years old in 1800.
With discriptor of woman, birthyear at 1779 will be used, yeilding about 30 years old in 1800.

Registered 4 May 1814, Waters Dunn Jr puchased Will ($340) and Jacob ($400) from the Estate of Waters Dunn Sr in transaction dated 4 Jul 1804. image 527 of 776

When the estate of Waters Jr was appraised in 1808 we see William ($275), and Jacob ($350), among others. These are likely the same men.

Research Notes

Merge and Clean-up pending as of 6 Dec 2023. Patience Reeves and her Spouse Richard Gatewood are shown with duplicate daughters named Sarah.

  1. Sarah Ann Gatewood manager Casey Williams
the spouse is shown as Walter Waters Dunn
managed by Julia Fitzgerald
  1. Sarah Gatewood Dunn manager Karen Holliday
the spouse is shown as Waters Dunn manager Karen Holliday

I propose merging Walter Waters Dunn into Waters Dunn as first step. Second step merge Sarah Ann Gatewood into Sarah Gatewood Dunn. After those steps are accomplished, we can then proceed to update Biography and sources for Patience Reeves. Info from "The Reeves Project" https://thereevesproject.org/data/tiki-index.php?page=Reeves_Patience_3258 and https://www.clingram.com/famhis/getperson.php?personID=I7276&tree=Ingram can inform this next step. Note I have corresponded with Beverly the maintainer of the Reeves Project and have permission to quote her research.

Rejecting merge that I proposed for the following reason.

Sophia (Dunn) Collins (1805-1879) is shown to be the daughter of Waters Walter Dunn (abt.1784-1814) and Judith (Parrish) Watson (abt.1779-1856).

This Waters Dunn-14069 (1784-1814) is not the same man as the son of Waters Dunn and Sarah Gatewood. More collaboration is needed to set this straight.

Walter was born in 1725. He passed away in 1803.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Waters by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Waters:
