Once again it becomes our sad duty to record the passing of an old and very highly respected resident of the Molong district. The victim of the " grim reaper" on this occasion being Mr. Patrick Francis Dunn, who breathed his last at 9.30 on Tuesday night, the immediate cause of death being heart failure, following on the effects of that dread disease diabetes. Deceased was a comparatively young man, being only only 56 years and three months old. Up till about three years ago he had enjoyed the best of health, but about that time he began to ail, and on consulting a medical man was informed that he was suffering from diabetes. He then went to Sydney and consulted a specialist, hoping that the verdict already received would prove incorrect, but unfortunately it was confirmed. From that time on he had been an almost constant sufferer, though he fought bravely, and bore up cheerfully against his affliction. The constantly recurring acute attacks, however, gradually sapped his strength, and some three weeks ago he was forced to take to his bed, and did not leave it again except for brief intervals up to his death. Late last week it was evident that despite skilful medical attention, and careful and loving nursing, the end was rapidly approaching, and the various members of the family were summoned to the bedside. The end, however, did not come till Tuesday evening, when he passed peacefully away, surrounded by the members of his family.
Mr. Dunn was a son of the late Mr. Michael Dunn, of Mullion Creek, and had resided in this district for the greater portion of his life. For the past 26 years he had been in the employ of Major Smith, of Nandillyan, being overseer of the farming department on that estate, a position which he filled up to the time of his death, in a manner highly creditable to himself and satisfactory to his employer.
Some 36 years ago he married a daughter of the late Robert Ward, of Molong Creek, who survives him. The outcome of the union was a family of ten—three boys and seven girls— the youngest of whom is nine years.
They are (daughters), Mrs J. Leathem, Misses Florrie (Orange), Angelina, Ethel, Dorrie, Ada and Ruby ; (sons), William (Tantallion), Edward and Norman. Three brothers and five sisters survive him, Messrs Thos. Dunn (Molong), M. Dunn (Orange), and John (Alectown), Mrs. A. Hayes (Molong), Mrs. Cooper (Orange), Mrs . Smith (Nyngan), and Mrs. H. Bevan (Mullion Creek).
The deceased gentleman was loved and respected by all with whom he came in contact for his many sterling qualities, and straightforward, upright character— he was one of the few of whom one could truthfully say, " his word was his bond." He was of a most charitable disposition, and few if any appealed to him in vain, when it was possible for him to give the assistance asked, while the open hearted hospitality dispensed at his house was known throughout the length and breadth of the district.
As a neighbour he was always kind, and considerate. In his home life he was kind and gentle, a loving husband and father—more can be said of no man.
Universal sympathy is expressed throughout the district for the bereaved family and relatives in their great loss, and with others the Argus extends its heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing ones, and of the departed says, in reverence, REQUIESCAT IN PACE
The funeral which was a very large one, and an eloquent tribute to the respect in which deceased was held, took place yesterday morning, the cortege leaving deceased late residence at Nandillyan at 9.30, and proceeding to the R.C. church in Molong, where a brief service was conducted by the Rev. Father Lawler. The remain were then taken to the cemetery and interred in the R.C. potion thereof, the Rev. Father Lawler officiating at the graveside.
