Biography

Martin was born about 1780 and lived at Daingean (Philipstown), Co Offaly and was a farmer.

He was the father of:

1. Fr Patrick Dunne (1818-1900) who was born in Daingean in 1818 (or 1820) an Irish priest who played a major role in the early catholic church in Australia as parish priest of Geelong in the 1850s, arranging immigration to Queensland from Tullamore in the 1860s, and a parish priest in central New South Wales from 1868 until his death in Albury in 1900.[1]. The register at Daingean commences in 1820 and records the baptism to Martin Dunne and Anne Rigney of Patrick Dunne on 13/1/1820.[2]

2. Michael Dunne (b c 1800) of Mountrath who married MAry Hanlon and whose daughter Alicia Dunne lived with her uncle Fr Patrick Dunne in Geelong before she married Peter Lalor, leader of the miners rebellion of Eureka, in Geelong in 1852.

3. John Dunne (1807-91) of Rhode who married Mary Dunne and had six children including Fr John Dunne (1846-1916) who was later the first Cathol.oic Bishop of Wilcannia in western New South Wales, Australia, known as a nephew of Fr Patrick Dunne.[3].

4. Catherine Dunne (1815-91) who married Terence Dunne (1813-89) at Philipstown in 1834 before emigrating to Victoria in 1852. Her death certificate names her parents as Martin Dunne, farmer, and Anne Rigney.[4].

5. Mary Dunne (1814-1885) who married a policeman called McCarthy and died at Philipstown in 1885. Her will in 1882 names as beneficiaries her brother Rev P. Dunne living in Australia and her niece Mary Neylon (who was the daughter of Catherine Dunne).[5]

Martin's parentage is unknown - there are many Dunnes in Offaly and Laois. His son Patrick claimed the Dunnes of Barnaboy as close relatives, so it is likely that Martin was of that family. The John Dunne farmer of Barnaboy Kings County who made a Catholic Qualification Oath in Dublin in 1786 may then be his father.

Some speculate that he was descended from the leading Dunne family of Brittas through Nicholas Dunne, but there is no evidence for this link.

Hi - just on your last point of Martin Dunne possibly being related to the Dunnes of Barnaboy - this is correct as I am descended from the Barnaboy Dunnes and have the obituary of Elizabeth Dunne (dau. of John Dunne) 1845-1917 which mentions that

"Miss Dunne was a member of one of the most respected families in the county as it was one who gave many of its members to the service of God, the late Father Pat Dunne who was P.P at Wagga Wagga Australia being her cousin.
