Biography

Eliza was baptised 17 Sep 1820 at Stithians [1]

Nicholas G Kinsman, s/o Nicholas Kinsman, married Eliza Jane Treloore Dunstan, d/o John Dunstan, in 1840 in Gwennap [2][3]

Nicholas and Eliza were recorded on the 1841 census living on Vogue Hill in St Day. Nicholas was a mason. [4]

Family lore has it that Eliza left the marital home sometime after the birth of their son Nicholas in 1843, leaving their two children in the care of Nicholas, who then decided to go and work in Mexico, leaving the children in the care of his parents. In 1847 those grandparents left Cornwall to go and live in Ontario, Canada.

While this is not impossible, the dates of events make it somewhat unlikely.

In 1851 her children Eliza and Nicholas were recorded as being in Redruth Union Workhouse [5]. That is not a place where you would place your children if you had any choice in the matter.

That year, her husband was working in Mexico and his parents had emigrated to Canada (in 1847) - leaving the children who had been placed in their care behind in the workhouse?

It is also worth noting that in 1850 her husband married Severa Whitburn in Mexico. Either he knew that his first wife was deceased, or he knowingly entered into a bigamous marriage. Divorce or annulment at that time was very difficult to achieve in England, and virtually unknown for the majority of people.

In 1861 Nicholas and Eliza had joined their father and his new wife, Severa, who had moved from Mexico and were then living in Ontario. [6]

A more likely scenario is that Nicholas left to seek work in Mexico in 1844, leaving the children with his wife. In 1847 his parents emigrated to Canada. Sometime between 1847 and 1850, Eliza most likely died. This would be the most natural set of circumstances by which the children would end up being in the care of the parish in 1851. No death or burial record has been found to substantiate this, but no credible future for Eliza has been found either.

Elizabeth Jane Trelake Dunstan was married to Nicholas Grenfell Kinsman, Jr. on 22 Dec 1840 in St. Day, Gwenap, Cornwall, England. Elizabeth left the marriage and Nicholas was left to car for his two children after Elizabeth left him. As the tin and copper mines were beginning to close in Cornwall, early the next year, Nicholas left his two young children, Eliza Jane born 1841 and Nicholas John Dunstan Kinsman born 1843, in the care of their grandparents. Nicholas then immigrated to Vera Cruz, Mexico where he worked in the silver mines at Real Del Monte, Hidalgo State, Mexico.
