Biography

This profile is part of the Dunstan Name Study.

Dora May Dunston was born in 10 September 1880 in New Almaden, Santa Clara county, California. She is the daugher of John Dunstan and Elizabeth Pearce, both born in England.

She married Peter Adam on August 24, 1907 at the Metropolitan Methodist parsonage, the residence of Rev. G. K. B. Adams in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. She was 26 years old, single and states that she was born in New Almaden, California and her residence at the time was San Francisco. The groom's residence was Seattle, Washington and he was 26 years old, single, born Edinburgh, Scotland and his father was George Adam. The marriage was performed by Rev. S. J. Thompson and witnesses were Elizabeth Dunstan and H. A. Adams.[1]

Dorothy was never described as having an occupation other than housewife, except that the 1900 U.S. Census lists her at age 20 as an "inmate" in a nurse's residence in San Francisco along with 38 other females.[2]

Peter and Dora traveled to the Territory of Hawaii, arriving in Honolulu on 8 January 1904, embarking from Vancouver, B.C.[3]

The 1910 US Census has Peter and Dora, now both 29, living in Seattle, King County, Washington. However, Dora May is now calling herself Dorothy M., and this continues until her death in 1954, except for her naturalization papers in 1918 where she is still Dora May.[4]. Peter is listed as a bookkeeper. They now have a daughter, Dorothy I., born c. 1909 (age 1), and lodger Frederic T. Dunston, possibly Dora's brother.

Peter and Dora were living at #4186 Shafter Ave., Oakland, Alameda County, California, according to Peter's draft registration card.[5]

Peter and Dora became citizens of the U.S. on 23 April 1918, at a ceremony attended by Dora's mother "Bess" V. Dunston. They now have two children, Dorothy Isabella Adam (born Seattle 12 June 1908) and Kenneth Dunston Adam (born Oakland 1 June 1917).[6][7]

The 1920 U.S. Census lists Peter and Dorothy as age 39, living with their two children Dorothy I. age 11 and Kenneth D. age 2. For some reason 4-year-old nephew Robert F. Dunstan (born Washington state) is living with them.[8]

The 1930 U.S. Census lists Peter and Dorothy as age 49, living with their two children Dorothy I. age 21 and Kenneth D. age 12. Dorothy's widowed mother Elizabeth, age 86, is also present.[9]

The 1940 U.S. Census lists Peter and Dorothy as living alone in Oakland, Alameda, California.[10]

Dorothy died on 6 December 1954 in Oakland, Alameda County, California and was buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, San Mateo County, California.[11]

Hi Chris, I'm following your story about Dora May Dunston. You might be interested in this Bessie V showing up as the wife of one of John Dunston and Elizabeth Pearce's sons, Ernest A Dunstan. ( https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9S6-XCR3?i=662&cc=2001287 ) Once again the fluidity of spelling provides further angst for me and no doubt others, as I follow anything Dunstone, Dunston & Dunstan. It is easy to see and understand these changes. Cheers, Howard Dunstone

Hi Chris, Your mention of Dora's parents being John Dunston and Elizabeth Pearce has led me on a journey to find more. I think this is her parents; Dunston Family.jpg showing gravestone of Dora May's parents John and Elizabeth Dunstan. I am in touch with a direct descendant of John Dunstan whose father was a Thomas Dunstone of Camborne, Cornwall. John was also born in Camborne and came out to Dodgeville circa 1845. John married Elizabeth Pearce in 1865 in Dodgeville, Wisconsin. Do you know of any of Dora May's siblings? -- Howard JD

Thanks, Bob, for contacting me. Yes, Dora was born in CA. I have some records of them in several places. I came across her because I decided to investigate all my grfather’s family, and I found out that there were 4 brothers and three sisters I had not heard about. The two eldest bros. moved to the US followed later by two sisters. I’m not going to follow them up any more, as these is so much else to do with my mom’s branch!

Attached, is a picture of Dorothy Dunstan. Do you have a picture of Peter Adam? If so, I would like one to compare it to the lot of unidentified old pictures that I got when my parent's died. -- Robert Dunstan

Morning Chris, You are right, Frederic is her younger brother. John & Elizabeth had; Francis Pearce 1866 William John 1868 Adaline 1871 Elmo Remington 1873 Elva Hicks 1876 Herbert Thomas 1877 Dora May 1880 Frederic Theodore 1883 Ernest Albert 1885 Francis Pearce is the grandfather to Robert ( Bob ) who has all these details. I know it is off line for you and a marriage outlier as well so I'll leave it there unless you need more. Cheers, Howard
