Biography

This profile is part of the Dupre Name Study.

At this point, it is unclear how or when Jean arrived in Louisiana. Jean's birth was estimated to be about 1765. He was listed as a native of Bordeaux, France and a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, Viceroyalty of New Spain in his children's birth records. [1]

Jean married Yve Oliva Naquin on 21 January 1788 in Ascension Parish, Louisiana.[2] [3]

What is clear is that by 1810 he was one of the original Landowners of Lafourche Interior, part of the United States Territory of Orleans, a few years before Louisiana statehood. This area was comprised of mainly Acadians, French, Spanish, Germans and others who spoke a French Acadian dialect and became known as Cajuns.

http://www.lagenweb.org/terrebonne/resources/settlers.html His land claim of #342 was in T18S R19E Sec.8. A tract of land on both sides of Bayou Terrebonne, 436.96 sup. acres, adjoining land of Joseph M Boudreaux, settled prior to 2 October 1800. He was listed as being 46 years old with his wife and at least 9 children in the 1810 census. [4]

In 1822, he and his wife donate land to many of their children and spouses of some children. In 1826, he is part of a Partnership – “The Canal BELANGER Society” formed to dig a canal from the Plantation of Hubert BELANGER to the canal of William FIELDS on Bayou Lafourche. This important waterway transformed the movement of goods and services from New Orleans to the new town of Houma. This is very important for the town of Houma, considering these were the days of horse and buggy travel.

In the 1830 census, he is listed in the 70-80 age group and his wife is in the 60-70 group. Four males under the age of 20 and three females under the age of 30 were listed, also included were two slaves. http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/terrebonne/census/terr1830.txt
