RIN 7bd56353-f195-4412-a032-97f856e86de1 14 Dec 1907 Moreauville, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, USA Physical Description: A newspaper article about the story of Margaret Strapp, who came to Moreauville as an orphan in 1907. META <metadataxml><content><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Last week's story named some of the people who arrived on the orphan train in the early 1900's. Part Three in the series begins with actual interviews of Avoyelleans who came here to live with new parents.<span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">&nbsp;</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Mrs. Abram Dupuis of Moreauville recalled some memories of Foundling.</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">&nbsp;</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Seven-year-old Margaret Strapp was on the train that pulled into the Moreauville Depot on December 14, 1907. On her head she wore a little black felt hat with a red ribbon. Her dress was white with blue polka dots, and Margaret, Child No. 22, was told that she was going to find a new momma and daddy. Her new father, Mr. Jenkins Joffrion, was waiting at the depot to take her home on horseback.</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">&nbsp;</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">On July 23, 1979 Margaret Strapp, now Mrs. Abram Dupuis, celebrated her 79th birthday and on July 29, 1979 I sat in her small tidy living room as she recalled the earlier events of her life for me.</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">&nbsp;</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Like many other children from the home, she was never sure of the reasons why she was placed in the Foundling Home. She obtained many years later a birth certificate showing that her mother was Mary Strapp from Ireland, her father's last name was Gray. Some of her memories of the Foundling Home were very clear - the Sisters who cared for her were Sr. Teresa Vincent, (a co-founder of the Home) and Sr. Georgiana. She remembers all of the children eating in a large dining room, the food in huge tubs was passed to each child in a wheelbarrow. All of the children napped after the meal, resting their heads on their folded arms on the bench. They each had their own bed, many beds were in one large room. At Christmas the children were seated in a circle and given toys to play with.</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">&nbsp;</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">When asked if she remembered anything of the train ride itself she said, "There was one older girl crying. As a peddler would come around her parents would encourage her to pick out something, yet all the items were just too strange and unfamiliar to the little girl from New York. Her most vivid memory was of how different the food was here in the South. "I did not know what an egg was."</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">&nbsp;</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Every year until she was 18 a hospital representative visited to check on her and make sure all was well. When she was 15, her adopted father was killed on a railroad track in Moreauville and her pregnant mother remarried Preston Johnson. Shortly afterward, Joseph Jenkins Joffrion was born and raised as her brother.</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">&nbsp;</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">On December 21, 1926 Abram Dupuis and Margaret Strapp Joffrion were married and in the years to come had two children, Burton Dupuis of Moreauville and a daughter, Georgianna. Georgianna (Mrs. Marvin Lacour of Moreauville) was named after one of the nuns who cared for Margaret.</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">&nbsp;</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">I asked how she felt about... But, they treated me well. My parents were poor and could not give me all they wanted to but they took good care of me."</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">&nbsp;</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">At age 80 Mrs. Dupuis is a charming, vibrant person who still keeps busy in her home and yard.</span></p></line></content><metadataxml> CREA 2019-10-22 16:54:33.000 Origin: u
