Biography

R. Louis Dupuis was born Roy Louis Dupuis was born on November 10,1907. He was known by the nickname 'Louie' and was a member of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes of western Montana. He was enrolled with a blood quantam of 7/16 degree. His heritage comes from the Kootenai an Pend d'Oreille trives in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

Louie attended Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Oregon and graduated as Valedictorian of his class in 1927. While attending school, he purchased a 4-string banjo and proceded to become an accomplished banjo player. He could not read music, but rather played by 'ear'. Over the years, he also learned to play the piano, violin and harmonica. He enjoyed playing at the box socials over the years as well singing with the choir at the Catholic Church in St. Ignatius, MT in the late 1930's.

When he finished school at Chemawa, he returned to the Flathead Indian Reservation working on his father's farm until about 1933. Then he gained employment with the CCC's (Civilian Conservation Corps) in 1933 working as a Foreman for a crew of indians building roads in the Jocko Valley and mountains. After, he gained employment as a forester with the Flathead Agency, Bureau of Indian Affairs in St. Ingatius, MT. He married his wife (Ann (Decker) Dupuis) of 47 years on October 30, 1933 in Phoenix, AZ. They lived in US Gov. housing in St. Ignatius while he was the Agency Forester until 1940, when he was transferred to Polson, MT to be their Agency Forester for that district, and where he finished out his career.

Louie worked for the Forestry Branch of the Bureau of Indian Affairs for over 30 years in many different capacities. He scaled timber, maintained telephone lines, delivered supplies, was fire crew supervisor, surveyed boundary lines and worked on timber cruises.

Louie was preceded in death by both his wife and son (Raymond).

He passed away on July 28, 1981 of myocadial infarction.
