Avena Township was originally known as Howard. The first town was called Howard's Point which was west of the current St. Elmo. She was aged 87 years, 2 months and 17 days. Mary Elizabeth, daughter of the late Morris and Rachel Logue Durbin, pioneer residents of Fayette county, was born Nov. 23, 1861, on her parents farm four miles north of St. Louis and had lived in the community virtually all her life. She was united in marriage with Charles H. Clark of St. Elmo on August 20, 1888, her husband preceding her in death on April 15, 1945. Five brothers, four sisters, four half brothers and one half sister also preceded her in death. Mrs. Clark is survived by the following sons and daughters, Charles Dial Vandalia; Otis E. of Stonington; Louis of Pleasant Plains; Mrs. Lorn Julius of Shelbyville; Mrs. Jennie Tipsord of St. Elmo, Mrs. Nellie Tipsword,, of Mason; and Mrs. Iva Bandy of Decatur. A daughter Mae, died in infancy. There are 34 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. She leaves one brother Joe Durbin, of near St. Elmo. Mrs. Clark, except for a few years when she lived in and near Decatur, spent her entire lifetime in Fayette county. She was known familiarly as Aunt Bess and was loved by all who knew her. She had been in good health until the lat few months and was seriously ill for only four days. Deceased was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church in St. Elmo, where funeral services were held at 9:30 o'clock, Saturday morning with burial in St. Elmo Catholic Cemetery.
