Biography

Charles Duret was born about 1645 in France.[1]

La Boulaye became a distinguished officer in Flanders in 1677.[1]

By 1685 he replaced Bergier in Acadia as royal lieutenant for the king.[1]

In 1686, at Chedabouctou, Le sieur de la BOULAIS [recte Charles Duret], royal lieutenant, was living in Fort Saint-Louis at the end of the bay with 15 or 20 servants. This was the base for the cod fishing operation. Also, there were 3 or 4 inhabitants who cleared and manured about 3 arpents of land. Besides the fort, there were several roughly built huts. At the end of May, the fishing company's ship, the Saint-Louis, arrived 25 miles away at Canseau to fish for cod. Shortly afterwards, the intendant, or administrator, of New France, Jacques de Meulles spotted the ship on his way to pick up La Boulaye to visit nearby Cape Breton and tour Acada.[2][1]

In 1688, La Boulaye escaped to Quebec so as not to be captured by British buccaneers who attacked the fort many times.[1][3]

He was back in Chedabouctou in 1690. Dauphine Montorgueil, the commander of Fort Saint-Louis in 1690, and Bochart de Champigny reported that La Boulaye had returned to France.[1]

Charles died after 1694 in France when he received back pay for his service in Acadia.[1][3]
