David Durfee Jr served with Rhode Island Militia during the American Revolution.
David Durfee Jr was born on the 9th of April 1739 in Tiverton, Rhode Island.[1][2] He was the son of David Durfee Sr and Abigail (Wing) Durfee.[1] David married Mary Gifford on the 24th of January 1760 in Tiverton.[3][4] He was twenty-years-old at the time. That same year King George III ascended to the throne in England.[5] He would later issue a proclamation in an attempt to organize the new North American empire. Their son William came along at the start of 1761.[6] By the time Patrick Henry delivered his "Give me liberty or give me death!" speech,[5] David and Mary had added Thomas,[7] Ruth,[8] Christiana,[9] Abigail[10] and Elizabeth[11] to their family.
We the People
In 1774 David was living in Tiverton.[12][13] When the Rhode Island Military census was taken in 1777, David was still living with his family in Tiverton.[14] David's enlistment date is unknown, but at some point he had taken up arms in support of the colonies.[15] By the time the British Parliament empowered King George to negotiate peace with the colonies,[5] Joseph,[16] Mary[17] and David[18] (the third) had joined the family. A year after little David had arrived, the English Parliament voted against further war with the colonies.[5] The war that had raged on, effecting all of the colonies, was finally coming to an end. Wanton was the tenth child of David and Mary, and arrived in the fall of 1783.[19] Their second son, Thomas, had gone heavenward. The eleventh, and final, child born to David and Mary was another Thomas.[20] They now were a family of twelve.
In the year 1810 David was living in Tiverton, with just his wife in the household.[25] He would have been seventy-one years of age at that time. David continued to live in the town that he was born in, as he died in Tiverton at the age of eighty-four.[26] His will was dated April 16th 1816, and was recorded at Tiverton on the 5th of June 1824.[1] David was laid to rest in the David Durfee Lot in Tiverton.[27][2] His wife Mary joined him five years later.[28]
