Little is known of William "Littleberry" Durham who, according to US Census records, was born about 1799 in Anderson County, South Carolina, USA. Earlier genealogies have confused him with another "Berry Durham," born in 1812 to Charles Durham (1770-1834) and his wife, Mary (Fortune) Durham (abt.1773-1842). However, his family tree on FamilySearch indicates he had a different "Durham pedigree," possibly distantly related to Charles & Mary (Fortune) Durham but not their child.
I am therefore detaching them as his parents and attaching him to William Berry Durham (abt.1775-1844), known as "Buck" Durham, as his father.
William "Littleberry" Durham married Lucinda F Hammond (abt.1805-1893), most-likley around 1825 when he was 26 and she would have been 20 years old. They had the following 7 children:
On the 1850 US Census, William and Lucinda Durham were recorded as 51 and 45 years old and married. Both born in South Carolina, they were living on the Durham farm in the Eastern Sub-Division of Anderson County, South Carolina. Their farm was valued at $1,500 US dollars. Their household included 5 sons: Moses age 14, James, 11, Charles age 8, Samuel, 5, and Ezekial Durham, 4 years old. Their oldest child, daughter: Elmina, now 21 was married to William Scott, 24, also a South Carolina native. They were living with her family but farming their own land, valued at $600 US dollars. Both William Durham and William Scott were "Farmers". [1]
William "Littleberry" Durham passed away on 28 November 1857 at about 58 years old on his farm in Anderson County, South Carolina, USA. His burial site is not known but could be an unmarked grave in the Durham-Woodson Family Cemetery, Powdersville, Anderson County, South Carolina, where his father is interred.[2]
William's wife, Lucinda (Hammond) Durham, survived her husband's passing. She survived the rigors and hardships of the US Civil War. On the 1870 US Census, she was recorded as 65 years old, a widow, living with her son, E. A. [Ezekial Albert] Durham and his family (wife and 2 small daughters) on their farm in Williamston Township, Anderson County, South Carolina, USA. Interestingly, she was described on the Census as a "Domestic Servant" although it's clear that she was living with her son and family. Another son, Charles W. Durham, and his family lived on a neighboring farm.[3]
Lucinda (Hammond) Durham passed away on 8 May 1893 in Powdersville, Anderson County, South Carolina, USA. No Find A Grave Memorial has been found for her.
