Ed, born about 1873[1][2][3][4]
on Hanlan's Point,[3][4] Toronto Islands,[2] was the son of John Durnan[2][3] and Emily Hanlan.[1][3] His name was actually John Edward Durnan, but he went by his middle name, Edward,[1] to distinguish him from his father.
Edward's father died when he was young: in 1881 Edward, 9, and his sister Elizabeth, 7, lived with their widowed mother Emily Durnan in St. George's Ward in West Toronto.[1] They were surrounded by family: their spinster aunt Mary Ann Hanlan lived with them, and their uncles Edward "Ned" Hanlan and John Hanlan were neighbours.[1]
His uncle Ned Hanlan was a world champion oarsman and, perhaps unsurprisingly, Ed also became a champion rower. He gave his occupation as "athletic performer" when registering his marriage[2]
to Minnie Kyle[2][3][4] on 06 Mar 1901[2] in Toronto.[2]
Eddie died aged 55[3] of diabetes[3][4] and cardiac failure[3] on 27 May 1928[3] (possibly 28 May[4]). He was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery,[3][4] Toronto.
Research Notes
Birth date: birth registration not yet located. 1873 estimated from later records.
1872 - 1873: from age 55 at death on 27 May 1928 - death registration[3]
1872 - 1873: from age 55 at death on 28 May 1928 - burial register[4]
1873 - 1874: from age 27 on 06 Mar 1901 - marriage registration[2]
Mother's name: all records consistently give Emily Hanlan as his mother except his marriage registration which gives D.A. Macdonald.[2] It is likely not a coincidence that the best man was G.M. McDonald.[2] It is possible Mr McDonald made an error when helping with the submission of details for the registration (i.e. unthinkingly gave his own mother's name).
Death date: death registration and burial register differ by one day, asee below. Assume death register is accurate as the certificate is generally used to complete the burial register. Both agree burial was 30 May 1928.[3][4]
