Biography

Rose (Durnin) Murray was born in Ireland.

Rose Durnin, daughter of James Durnin and Mary Unknown (poss. Sharkey), was born about 1829 in Demondstown, County Louth, Ireland.[1][2]

She immigrated with her parents and siblings to the United States before 1850, when Rose married Daniel Murray, son of Michael Murray and Alice Sharkey, on 12 August 1850 at St. Helena Parish, Louisiana. They settled there near their Irish relatives.[3] A month after their marriage, during the 1850 census, Rosa was enumerated on 12 September 1850 with her parents,[4] while Daniel was enumerated just four households away as a farmer and head of a one-person household.[5] It's unknown why they weren't listed together in the same household in this census.

They had these known children:

  1. William M Murray (abt.1852 - 1894)
  2. Philip Alexander Murray (1855 - bef.1870)
  3. John Henry Murray (1857 - 1916)
  4. George Patrick Murray (1859 - 1934)
  5. Thomas Murray (abt.1862 - )
  6. Robert Joseph Murray (abt.1867 - 1937)
  7. Francis Patrick Murray (1869 - 1928)
  8. Dan Murray (abt.1874 - )

Rose and Daniel and their children were enumerated on the 1860 and 1870 censuses in Greensburg, St. Helena Parish. They owned a modest farm.[1][6] In 1880 they lived in the Third Ward.[7]

Rose was widowed in 1894 in Tangipahoa Parish.[2] She was enumerated as a widow during the 1900 census, living in the Fourth Ward of St. Helena Parish with her adult children John, Robert, and Patrick.[8]

She died on 21 February 1907 in St. Helena Parish, and was buried at Sharkey Cemetery in Tangipahoa Parish.[9][2]
