Joseph was baptized on 8 Jun 1797 in Saint-Régis, Quebec (Akwesasne), as “Joseph Duroché”. Sponsors were Joseph Parré and Maria Ludovica (Marie-Louise) Parré.[1]
On 6 Jun 1820, Joseph (son of Antoine Durocher, “cultivateur du bois sauvage” (farmer living in Indian Lands) and Marguerite (illegitimate, also living “au bois sauvage”, Upper Canada) were married in Saint-Régis. Witnesses (témoins) for the groom were Pierre Guillemet and Joseph Paré: for the bride, Patrice Gallaher and Eustache Vandandaigue.[2] In later records Marguerite used the surname Chatelain.
In 1851, Joseph (farmer), Margaret, Joseph, Peter, Edward, Sophia, Mary, and Bridget lived in the 2nd Concession, Charlottenburgh, on the Derochie homestead, a 1-story log house (next to Joseph’s brothers Stephen and Angus). A note records that “The Deruchies are of the first settlers, and good + respectable farmers of French descent”.[3]
Joseph died of heart disease in 1860, aged 64,[4] and was buried in Flanagan’s Point Cemetery in the presence of his sons John, Joseph, Alexander, and Peter.[5]
