Biography

Peter Duross was born in Ireland; family information says he was born about 1833, that he came from County Cork, and eventually left because of the potato famine. He married Elizabeth Cleary in Ireland in 1855, where their first child, John, was born in 1857. Their year of immigration to Detroit may have been 1860, per records from the Detroit Recorder's Court. It appears their six other children were all born in Michigan, presumably Detroit, where the 1860 and 1870 Federal censuses list their household. Peter appears in the Civil War Union draft in June 1863. Peter died in a presumed accidental drowning with another man in late July 1876, per a Detroit Free Press article on the search for the two men. Peter was there identified as a carpenter, age 41, residing at 18 McDougall Avenue. He was buried in Mt. Elliott Cemetery in Detroit.
