Biography

I was born in 1988 in Norwich. My mother's family is from Norfolk, England. My father grew up in West Bromwich; his mother's family was from West Bromwich, but his father was born in India.

I started researching my family history to find out more about my Indian heritage, which has been a real challenge! Though I still have a lot more to discover, I have found out some fascinating stories on both my mother and father's sides like Cyril Jacobs who smuggled government documents through war-ravaged China, or Isaiah Eglen, one of the so-called "disappearing Norfolks" at Gallipoli in WW1. I also seem to have a disproportionate number of ancestors involved in drunken pub brawls in sleepy Norfolk villages.

According to my DNA ancestry, my ethnicity can be linked back to English populations (about 60%), Central Asia and North-West India (about 25%) and a small amount of Irish/Scottish, Swedish and Germanic ancestry.

My (very) minor claim to fame is connecting a certain Game of Thrones actor to the global tree via my grandfather's first marriage (making us 8 degrees removed).

Apart from my own family, I have been researching:

I have also added Finnish presidents Mannerheim and Kekkonen, with the hopes of connecting them to the global tree.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with Matthew or other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Matthew:

Hi Matthew,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, coordinating with others is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Based on your tag the England Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to review other possibilities. Read the goals and tasks of the projects and join those which are a good fit.

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.

Hello

You may have been hard at work getting connected to family members who are already here and adding those who were missing. You probably have at least a few profiles that you manage now.

There's a fast and easy way to access those profiles using the Watchlist. So, this week we're going to look at How to Manage Your Watchlist.

Please let one of us know if you have questions! Just ask.

You're getting a good feel for the collaborative nature of WikiTree by now and collaboration isn't always easy. So, we've put together a few pointers that can make working in this type of environment a little easier: How to be a Successful WikiTreer.

Questions?? Just ask! If the above link does not work from your email, please go to your profile in the public comments and it will work from there.

Thanks, WikiMessenger Cindy

PS-Good work so far! Have you noticed on ancestor profiles on bottom right is "Research" where you can get sources and more information? Give it a try sometime!

Hi Matthew --

Be sure to check out the One Name Studies Project to see if anyone has started a project for one of the surnames in your family. Don't see one? Follow the instructions for starting your own!

Please let me know if you have questions. :-)

Thanks for volunteering.

You are now a confirmed member, and you can get started adding your family members. As we've said, WikiTree is quite different from other genealogy sites. So, we've put together a guided tour to help you learn how to use it. Your first stop is How to Start Climbing Our Tree. Tomorrow, you'll hear from a Mentor who will check in to see how you're doing and answer any questions you might have.

Next week, you'll get another message with your next stop on the guided tour.

You can also meet some of our members by joining in the fun with our Question of the Week in the G2G forum: Do you have any inventors in your family tree?

Welcome!
