Nellie R. Durrell was born on 9 Oct 1856 at Dunkirk, New York, the daughter of George O. Durrell and Ann J. Jewell, both born in New Hampshire.[1]

In 1860, Nellie "Derwill"/"Drwill" 3, lived in Dunkirk, Chautauqua, New York, with her parents George and Ann, and brother Juel.[2]

In 1870, Nellie Durrell, 13, lived with her parents, George and Ann J. Durrell, and 4 siblings in Dunkirk, Chautauqua, New York.[3]

Based on US Census and other records, Nellie and Jasper were married about 1876 and had at least the following children:

  • Frank Clinton Ball, b. ca. 1879; m. Pauline Conredy 16 April 1910 Butte, Silver Bow, Montana[4]; d. 7 July 1956[5]
  • Maude, b. ca. 1880; m. Robert L Shipman
  • Mabel N. Ball, b. ca. 1882, m. Edwin Johnson[6]
  • Henry Durrell Ball, b. 16 Sept 1887; m. Desiree E. Hunt 31 Aug 1910 at Chautauqua, New York[7]; d. 28 Feb 1915
  • Blanche Dale Ball, b. ca. 1887; m. Lotan H Finley 04 Aug 1911 at Chautauqua, New York[8]; d. 17 Sept 1941 Pine Castle, Orange, Florida.[9] (or b. ca. 1892)

In 1880, Nellie R. Ball, 23, lived with her husband Jasper C. Ball, and two children in Sheridan, Chautauqua, New York.[10]

In 1892, Jasper Ball, 39, and Nellie Ball, 36, lived in the Busti District, Chautauqua County, New York, with 5 children:[11]

Nellie and Jasper were divorced prior to 1920, as Jasper is shown as James C.J. Ball on that census, living in Mill Creek, Erie, Pennsylvania, with wife Clara and two young children.[12]

Nellie R. Durrell Ball, 73, married Jay A. Dye, 76, on 23 Dec 1929 at Chautauqua, New York. Both were of Jamestown, Chautauqua, New York, and it was the 2nd marriage for both.[1]

The Union Sun & Journal of Lockport, Chutauqua County, New York, carried the following obituary:

"Grandmother of Actress Died at IOOF Home
"Mrs. Nellie D. Ball Dye, 89, grandmother of Film Actress Lucille Ball, died Friday at the Odd Fellows Home in Lake Avenue where she had been a resident for the past six years. She had been in failing health for some time.
"Mrs. Dye was born in Dunkirk on Oct. 9, 1846, and came to the home as a member of Princess Rebekah Lodge, 252, Chautauqua. She leaves one son, F. Clinton Ball, of Watts Flats, who is the father of the film actress, and three daughters; Mrs. Maude Shipman of Lily Dale, Mrs. Blanche Finley and Mrs. Mabel Johnson of Florida.
"'Services will be held Monday afternoon t 2 o'clock at the home."[13]
