Mrs. Collins Dies Friday;.
Rites Monday. 1
Mrs. Eva Laura Collins, 93, 924 N. 5th Ave., died Friday afternoon at Marshalltown Manor after an illness of about two years. Services will be at 10 a. m. Monday at Pursel Davis Chapel with Rev. Donald Bell in charge. Burial will be in the Turner Cemetery three miles south of Garwin. 1
She was born near Conway, in Taylor County, Feb. 29, 1876, leap year, and celebrated only 23 actual birthdays. She was one of 13 children born to Charles and Laura Dutton. Her great grandfather fought under Washington in 1776 [probably Col. John Abbott, her great great grandfather] and her father fought under General Taylor for the Independence of Texas. 1
Mrs. Collins was reared and educated at Conway and was married to Frank Lewis on Nov. 1, 1894. They made their home on a farm near Garwin, where two sons were born, Captain, deceased in 1920, and Lee Ward, deceased in 1933. Three grand-daughters survive, Mrs. Lester Brenneman of Pittsburgh, Pa., Mrs. Harry Patten and Mrs. Wendell Egger, both of Marshalltown. Ten great-grandchildren also survive and two great-great-grandsons. 1 Collins moved to Chicago following the death of her husband in 1904, and made her home there until 1933 when she moved to Marshalltown. 1
On May 17, 1941, she was married to William H. Collins who preceded her in death two months ago. She is survived by three step-sons, Earl, Merle and Harold Collins, all of Marshalltown, 15 step-grandchildren, 54 step-great grandchildren, and three step great-great-grandchildren. 1
Mrs. Collins attended the Nazarene Church before her illness. 1
She was an active member of the Rebekahs, the Women's Relief Corps, past president of Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, a past noble grand, and a former Garden Club Member. 1
Several nieces and nephews from out of the state also survive.
