Biography

In 1552, Thomas Dutton by fine of Christopher Alleyn and his wife Ethelreda, was holding the manor at Sherborne. [1]

Thomas died in October 1581 at Sherborne, Gloucestershire and was buried there on 4 Oct 1581. [2]

Thomas left a detailed will dated 17 May 1581. [3]He made bequests to and mentioned:

  • my late wife Anne, daughter of Stephen Kirtonne, Esq, alderman of London
  • my cousin John Dutton of Whittington
  • his son Richard
  • my cousins William and Rauffe Dutton

A monument in the church at Sherborne reads: In a vault underneath this monument lies ye body of Thomas Dutton, Esq who died in ye Year of our Lord 1581. And the body of William Dutton his son who died in the year 1618 and Anne his wife, the daughter of Sir Thomas (sic) Nicholas of London, and the body of Thomas Dutton, the son of William Dutton, who died in the year 1610. [4]

The following is from "The Peerage of England":

This Thomas Dutton, second son, purchased the manor of Sherborne, in Gloucestershire, which had belonged to the late dissolved abbey of Winchecombe. He married, first, Mary, daughter of ....... Meyney, “, by whom he had only a daughter, Anne, wife to John Warnford, of Sevenhampton, in com. Wilts, Esq.

And by his second wife, Margaret (NB, should be Anne), daughter of Stephen Kirton, Esq. alderman of the city of London, and relict of Sir Thomas Withers, Knight, he had two sons, William, who continued the line, and Thomas, who died without issue; also a daughter, Eleanor, married at Sherborne, November 24th, 1586, to Ralph Salvyne, of Newbiggin, in Yorkshire, Gent, and afterwards knighted. Thomas the father, dying October 4th, 1581, was buried at Sherborne, and succeeded by his eldest son,

William Dutton, of Sherborne, Esq.
