William attended the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, and graduated with the Class of 1925. During World War II, William served in the North Atlantic and escorted of trans-Atlantic Convoys. William appears to have served as an officer aboard one or two destroyers and a light cruiser. He participated in the Naval Battle of Casablanca, which was related to Operation Torch, further related to the Allied invasion of North Africa in 1942. He served in theater during the Korean War (1950-1953) and retired a Rear Admiral (lower half or one star) in 1954. During his career, personal awards and decorations included the Legion of Merit and possibly the Navy Distinguished Service Medal.
