Harvey served for about 6 months during the Civil War in the 131st Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. When he mustered in November 1862, he left a pregnant wife and 5 young children at home. He was discharged just before the birth of his sixth child, a daughter, who was born in May 1863.
