Birth and Christening

Jonathan Dwight Jr, the son of Jonathan Dwight and Margaret Ashley, was born on 28 December 1772 in Springfield, Massachusetts. [1] [2] He was christened on 3 January 1773 in Springfield. [3]

Education

Dwight graduated from Harvard Law School, a student of George Bliss, in 1793. [2] After being admitted to the bar, he got involved in 'merchantile affairs' and became a financial manager. [2]

Careeer

One of the incorporators of Old Springfield Bank (organised on 24 March 1814, he was selected to be the tax collector in the same year he finished law school. [2] He was the Bank's president from 1814 to 1817 and again on 22 March 1829. [2]

[He] was elected a member of the House of Representatives in 1805-1806, 1808-1809, 1816 and 1826; a member of the Senate in 1818-1821 and 1827; a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1820, and a member of the Governor’s Council in 1831.[2]

Family

Dwight married Sarah Shepard on 8 January 1798 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts. [2] [4] [5] [6] [7] They had eight children wih her (four boys and four girls). [2] They were:

Death and Burial

Hon Jonathan Dwight died 29 March 1840. [2] [16] [17] He was buried in Springfield Cemetery. [17]

[His papers] are primarily deeds. Also included is Jonathan’s will. They are dated from 29 Dec 1797 to 29 Nov 1836, with one undated item.[2]
