Note H1739Dr. Henry Dye, an early pioneer and frontier physician. He was also the primary founder of Plano Presbyterian Church and is credited with suggesting the name for the town of Plano. During the Civil War, Dye served as a surgeon for the Confederate Army. He died of Tuberculosis in 1878. He is related to both the Bowman and Brown families through the marriages of two his daughters to members of these families. 1

Henry Dye, M. D. was born Sept 30th, 1830, in Wood County, VA (now West VA). He commenced the study of Medicine at an early age. In 1849, he graduated from the Medical Department at the University of Louisville and came to Collin county the same year. As one of the founders of Plano, he opened an office and at once began a lucrative practice. Later, he attended the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from which school he graduated in March of 1861, after preparing his thesis on typhoid fever. Already the Civil War had cast its shadow. Dr. Dye served as a Surgeon in charge of Confederate hospitals in Arkansas. He was a primary founder of the Plano Presbyterian Church when it organized in 1871. He gave the hospital the land for its first building. When Dr. Dye returned from the service in Arkansas, he had contracted tuberculosis which weakened him and eventually led to his early death. In1877 - his health failed him; he closed his house and with his family went to South Texas, remained until August following - he finding the trip was not improving him, he returned to the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. H. Bowman, of Plano, Texas, and there on the 10th day of August 1878 this spirit returned to the God who gave it. Dr. Dye was the first physician to locate at Plano. His death was universally mourned - they knew they had lost a true friend and a worthy man, as well as an able physician. He was one of those who did not measure his services by the yard, but responded to the cry of the distressed. To know him well was to love him. 1
