Andrew was born in 1853. He is the son of Andrew Dykes and Margaret Semple. Andrew Dykes was first a dairyman at the farm of Burn, Glassford Parish. By 1881 he had moved to Laigh Netherfield Farm, Avondale Parish, and then by 1886 to Easter Moffat Mains, near Caldercruix. In 1901 he moved south to the farm of Burnside-on-Mabie in the Parish of Troqueer, Dumfries-shire, which was leased to him for a 15-year term at that time. Later again he moved to Crossford Farm, near Moniaive, and finally, when his son took over at Crossford, he moved to the smaller farm of Lochanhead, at Throughgate on the outskirts of Dunscore. [1]
