John was born in 1883. He is the son of Andrew Dykes and Elizabeth Wilson. John emigrated to Alberta, Canada, in 1907. He first lived in Edmonton, where he worked hauling freight from Edmonton to Peace River. After John was married, he farmed in several places; first in Oliver, outside Edmonton, t hen in Ardenode, north-east of Calgary, and next in Vulcan, south-east of Calgary.
