Biography

James Milledge Dysart, son of Joseph Lowery and Sarah Elizabeth (Upshaw) Dysart, was born January 23, 1842 in Cartersville, Bartow County, Georgia.[1]

The 1850 U.S. Federal Census records “Joseph Dyzert”, age 33 born in NC, as a farmer living in Division 12 of Cass County, Georgia. In his household are Sarah E. age 32 born in GA, Nancy L. age 9 born in GA, James M. age 8 born in GA, Mildred E. age 7 born in GA, Leroy W. age 5 born in GA, Americus age 4 born in GA, Samuel age 2 born in GA and John W. age 10 months born in GA.[2]

The 1860 U.S. Federal Census records Joseph L. Dysart, age 42 born in NC, as a farmer living in Georgia Militia District 827, Cass Co., Georgia. In his household are Sarah E. age 42 born in GA, James M. age 18 born in GA, Milliard E. (female) age 16 born in GA, Levy W. age 15 born in GA, Americus age 14 born in GA, Samuel age 12 born in GA, John age 10 born in GA, Julia A. age 8 born in GA, Joseph L. age 6 born in GA, William R.V. age 4 born in GA, and Homer W. age 1 born in GA.[3]

On June 13, 1861 James M. Dysart is recorded as a private in Company H, 18th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A. He was transferred to Co. A, 3d Battn. GA Sharpshooters and appointed 4th Sergeant June 8, 1863. Roll for Jan. 30, 1865, last on file, shows him present. Pension records show he surrendered at Appomattox, Va. Apr. 9, 1865.[4]

September 6, 1866 J.M. Dysart married "G.A. Pearce" in Bartow Co., Georgia.[5]

The 1870 U.S. Federal Census records James Dysart, age 27 born in GA, as a farmer living in Bartow Co., Georgia. In his household are Georgia A. age 25 born in GA and Ida G. age 2 born in GA.[6]

The 1880 U.S. Federal Census records James M. Dysart, age 38 born in GA, as a farmer living in Pine Log, Bartow Co., Georgia. In his household are his wife George Ann age 36 born in GA, son Clarence L. age 8 born in Arkansas, daughter Lena May age 3 born in GA, and daughter Esse Lula age 1 born in GA.[7]

The 1900 U.S. Federal Census records Sarah E. Dysart, age 82 born January 1818 in GA, as head of household living in Pine Log, Bartow Co., Georgia. She is a widow and recorded as having had 11 children with 6 still living. In her household are daughter Elizabeth age 56 born July 1842 in GA and son William a farmer age 44 born February 1856 in GA. Next door is James M. Dysart a farmer age 58 born January 1842 in GA and now a widower, his daughter Lena age 23 born November 1876 in GA and his daughter Flora age 15 born January 1895 in GA.[8]

The 1910 U.S. Federal Census records James M. Dysart, age 68 born in GA, as a farmer living in Pine Log, Bartow, Georgia. James is a widower and in his household are his daughter Lena M. age 33 born in GA, daughter Flora P. age 25 born in GA.[9]

The 1920 U.S. Federal Census records James Dysart, age 78 born in GA, as a farmer living in Pine Log, Bartow, Georgia. James is a widower and in his household are his daughter “Welma” [Lena] M. age 43 born in GA, daughter Flora P. age 35 born in GA.[10]

James M. Dysart died April 4, 1929 in Bartow Co., Georgia.[11] He was buried in Pine Log United Methodist Church Cemetery.[12]
